Politicians always will try and milk any kind of public situation like that. They can't seem to help it. They're just by and large cretinous people. Sarkozy got a ribbing for trying to force his way to the front for the photos...

Lamia, saw that article yesterday, it is a good one. Nothing new in the media placing far greater value on western lives than those elsewhere, but still needed saying.

On another issue, I have found it curious over the past day or so how just how annoyed many people get when I mention to them that, appalling and totally wholly unjustifiable as the attacks in Paris were, having looked into it, many of the cartoons published by the magazine over the past few years were clearly racist. It seems somehow to be heretical to recognise this (I've read umpteen attempts on various sites to 'contextualise' the cartoons over the past few days), the assumption being that I must therefore in some way, shape or form be saying that the attacks were justified or the fault of the journalists. Which I'm not.

And so it was ever thus - any one who ever says anything slightly different is always accused of trying to justify. And one thing many can never understand is that explaining is not justifying

Some of those photos are absolutely hilarious. I love the Star Wars, Usual Suspects and Last Supper ones.

You're right, Dave. And it could never have been any other way.

It's the duplicity of the "World Leaders" that gets on my threepenny bits. They were never, ever going to walk with the masses in Paris. So what they have essentially done is to use the event as one big photo op.

I don't see it like that. It's important that folk don't see Paris as a no-go area, otherwise "terror" wins.

So by ensuring the world's leaders are photographed in Paris together the whole world can see that they were there.

There's little point in all those world leaders going to Paris and them not being organised in one big photo. And as others have said to do that photo in a street that wasn't cordoned off and hadn't been "swept" would be too high a security risk at the best of times.

"voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

Hermann Göring - 1946

Worked then and working now.

10,000 troops to be deployed onto the streets of French cities. In London there are calls for troops to be posted outside Jewish supermarkets. I have little or no time for conspiracy theories but events of the past few weeks have me wondering.

At first they threw stones, then they moved onto GIANT bowling balls, then they used Kalashnikovs. You could be on the slippery slope to terrorism, Scotty? Get off before it's too late.

No need for terrorism once the causes are removed.

His Holiness The Pope wades in.

"Even in the case of a dear friend, Francis said, “If he says a swear word against my mother, he’s going to get a punch in the nose. That’s normal.”"

""Attack others religion & you risk backlash,"

Pope Francis suggesting slain #CharlieHebdo staff were irresponsible?

As popes go, and with my limited knowledge of modern ones, I like this one.

They, Charlie Hebdo, courted controversy and occasionally seemed a tad more racist than satirical but in absolutely no way deserved what happened to them but I am surprised at the limited security measures they had in place.

Just started reading up on everything now, I wonder where the murderers got their "military training" from. Thye started off by saying Syria, but 2 days later the story changed to Yemen. Some video released a wee while ago claiming Yemen from some Al Qeada splinter group. The female member implicated is said to have fled there, and the named third guy has a cast-iron alibi.

Long night reading shit, this is the start of...something...
