stocky
let it run its course, if she is guilty of wrongdoing then she should go if she isnt then let get on with things. The SNP are judged by different standards, and I expect them to be as well, the snp are trying to be different. , I am sure there are a guid few of tory and labour mps with plenty of hooses... but like i said , if wrong doing has been done she should go Nicola has obviously advised her to withdraw from party whip.. I also think the MSM are dying for an SNP head to roll... i bet they have been through the history of every single SNP MP ... more to come perhaps........ ErsatzThistle
Thomson has withdrawn the SNP whip at Westminster it's been announced. let it run its course, if she is guilty of wrongdoing then she should go if she isnt then let get on with things. Mairi Black once gave the wrong change in the chip shop scandal..... This is from just before the election. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/may/06/number-of-mps-who-earn-from-renting-out-property-rises-by-a-third Senior Tories playing the property game include Francis Maude, Chris Grayling, Jeremy Hunt, Phillip Hammond, Theresa Villiers, Oliver Letwin, Not to mention Cameron and Osbourne. From the Labour party, the born again socialist Andy Burnham has been at it. Veteran left winger Michael Meacher surprisingly has a few properties on the go too. Fiona MacTaggart owns her family business MacTaggart Heritable Holdings, a property investment and management company. And then we come to a recently retired MP, Mr James Murphy esq of Clarkston, East Renfrewshire ................. ErsatzThistle
The decision to revoke the SNP whip from Thomson was the right one. I hope Sturgeon is on top of this and has read the riot act to Thomson about it all. That said, many British and Scottish political giants of both the left and right, have had less savoury sides to their character. Half the Liberal cabinet of the Edwardian era were buying up huge stocks in the Marconi company just before they awarded them valuable government contracts. Cabinet ministers in the supposedly saintly Labour Government of 1945-1950 were also up to a similar game. Lloyd George had a proto-spin doctor called Maundy Gregory. It's looks pretty likely that the latter had a former socialist MP and anti-corruption activist called Victor Grayson, abducted and murdered. Keir Hardie and Sylvia Pankhurst had a long affair behind their respective partners backs. John MacLean neglected his wife and daughter in favour of political activism. And I say that as someone who really admires MacLean and Hardie. Winston Churchill initially had a mild admiration for Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini (the latter whom the British government awarded an OBE to) Tony Benn was minted and it appears he may have used a clever accountant to help his children avoid excessive inheritance tax. The question is really, who among us has a clean conscience ? I know I haven't.
DaveyDenoon
Right so what exactly is Thomson meant to have done that's wrong/illegal? Obviously if there's investigations into her affairs then it's sensible that she temporarily withdraws from the party whip. I can see the solicitor who acted on her behalf has been struck off but what is SHE supposed to have actually done wrong? What are the actual allegations? Clearly if she is guilty of any wrongdoing she has to go but would by no means be the first politician to be caught out so enough of the #snpbad shit as all the other parties have had much much worse. ErsatzThistle
I must say that John Lamont from the Scottish Conservatives has a cheek commenting on this when many of his own parties elected officials in Westminster and Holyrood have been involved in dubious financial practices. phart
nice line - made me laugh but i don't understand what is wrong with being a landlord ? food shelter and water are the basics of survival, partial "monopolization" of one of them for profit can be seen as not an ideal activity during a shortage of said basics. Landlords and tenants have a weird relationship over the years.

Elite TA
Westminster MP being suspended from their party is a fairly big story... It would be if it were true. What has actually happened is that she has voluntarily resigned the whip in Parliament - not her party membership and not "being suspended" you might note - whilst the Police investigation is underway. She may, or may not, be found guilty of wrongdoing. She may, or may not, be suspended from her party. Neither of these things have happened. Ally Bongo
Westminster MP being suspended from their party is a fairly big story... The reasons why ,In the grand scheme of things, are trivial compared to what else has been going on in Westminster The bottom line is that this is the perfect example of why SNP MP's and MSP's need to be more than squeaky clean as they will be treated far differently to Unionist MP's by the MSM Edited September 29, 2015 by Ally Bongo

ErsatzThistle
Anyone want to bet on what's next ? Mhairi Black got told off for running in the school corridor when she was 12. Black will be the No. 1 target for smear stories without a doubt. Some acts at Tommy Sheppard's club involve a wee bit of swearing. Carol Monaghan gave out a few punishment exercises when she was teaching at Hyndland Secondary. Joanna Cherry QC successfully prosecuted a no good criminal who's doting mother claims it's all a stitch up. Chris Law overtook someone on his motorbike. John McNally took too much hair off the top and not enough off the sides when working in his barber shop back in Denny. When he was in Runrig, Pete Wishart used to tap out morse code messages on his keyboard to a foreign government. And last but not least, the amazing discovery that Alex Salmond's Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr Granda was none other than Vlad the Impaler. Orraloon
Correct It seems owning 17 properties is bad, but less bad if you're an SNP person I'm pretty sure owning 17 properties isn't illegal, otherwise there are an awy lot of folk breaking that law in this country. There must be something else dodgy about this but I've no idea what it is. Whether it's morally right to own more than one property is a different matter. I haven't been very keen on most of the landlords that I have met (there are some good ones though) but without landlords I wouldn't have had any place to stay for the first 30 years of my life. Maybe we should nationalise all housing and allocate property on the basis of need rather than wealth? If Corbyn was to come up with that as a policy then maybe the media would be justified in saying he is a bit radical.

Allegedly she paid less for the properties than what was entered on the public records. http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/uk_news/scotland/article1609551.ece That is what she has allegedly done wrong, legally. From a moral point of view - and this is just my personal opinion - it is, to put it mildly, pretty poor form for someone make him or herself wealthy on the back the misfortune of others. Then again, you could argue - and I am sure Michelle Thomson will - that it is better to help people out who are struggling with mortgage payments by buying their property from them than to see people bankrupt and homeless. It is, though, politically embarrassing for a party who claim to be all about social equality and justice to have a prominent member who appears to have made a bonnie penny by buying up former council homes and letting them out on the private market. That said, I do wonder if someone somewhere has it in for Michelle Thomson. First we have the Ashley Madison allegations and now this (both, neither or some of which may be true). phart
I can see it being insufferable as a partisan considering two sets of completely different standards are being applied for political gain by the establishment. That doesn't mitigate any wrong doing, in fact i'd welcome this level of scrutiny if it was applied universally. Not going to spend too much time thinking about the specifics of the case though. Apart from to bemoan the fact the scrutiny isn't universal and it's politically led.
