irnbruman
Cabinet minister in scandal abusing public funds with public enquiry - what should be massive story - ITV News not a single mention - but lest we forget England are facing an uphill struggle against New Zealand at cricket. If this was the other way round and perpetrated by the SNP instead of against them - this wpuld be covered mercilessly by Unionist media. Nothing short of a disgrace - yet another fookin establishment cover up or keep it low key. Edited May 22, 2015 by irnbruman

Maq
Is there any reaction from the other (non SP) parties? I know he's a nobody, but Duncan Hothersall is bleating on twitter that there was nothing wrong with the memo, that it wasn't false, and that Carmichael hasn't lied to his constituents... unbelievable! Auld_Reekie
LibDems very quiet on it, which tells you everything you need to know. If anything, Labour types are either completely silent where before they milked it for every penny (hiya Kezia, hiya pal) or jumping in with two feet and trying to minimise the damage to Carmichael (hiya Duncan, hiya pal). Absolutely mental. Rather than defending him, Labour should be turning the screw rather than defending the indefensible - they need all the votes they can get. The reaction of some Labour folk is a microcosm of why they're f***ed. Hothersall especially. On another planet to the rest of us.
thplinth
Just Orkney - Shetland voted SNP Gawd man... feckin Orkney. They really are bowfin. Shetland need independence from Orkney. Maybe Nicola can fly up on the eve of the next referendum and negotiate that on the sly.
UPROAR
surely if parliament took the view that lying was unbecoming of such a position and suspended him for 21 days he could be recalled on petition by his constituents ? DaveyDenoon
That's the figure according to Paul Flynn who is on the "public administration select committee, which oversees the civil service." http://paulflynnmp.typepad.com/my_weblog/2015/05/veteran-mp-paul-flynn-to-demand-action-on-probe-delay-into-leaked-false-nicola-sturgeon-memo.html https://twitter.com/paulflynnmp Flynn is my local MP. As a concerned constituent worried about the standards displayed by MPs and Carmichael in particular I feel compelled to drop him a wee email to see if he intends to raise this issue further.... Orraloon
to be fair to Flynn he called Bullshit on how long the investigation was taking, basically saying you're just waiting to after the election. There are two big stories here. One is the "Carmichael is a lying shyte bag" story but the other is the "£1.4 million". At a time when they are cutting folks benefits left, right and centre they are supposedly spending £1.4 million into and investigation of 2 people. The accounts for this "enquiry" need to be audited. I would be quite happy to do it. And, I'll only charge them £20K plus expenses.
Hertsscot
Is there not some sort of code of conduct for MPs which prevents this type of behaviour? I can't see Carmichael stepping down voluntarily, time for some pressure from whoever is responsible for Parliamentary standards and from the Lib Dems themselves, do they honestly think such behaviour is acceptable? Just listened to news on Five live, fact that senior UK politican lies through his teeth, wastes public money and in all probablity helps swing election results doesn't even get a mention. Hertsscot
Just checking the LibDem website - trying to work out who to complain to re. Carmichael and I came across this: "At Westminster, the Scottish Liberal Democrats are represented by 11 MPs, including Cabinet Ministers Alistair Carmichael MP and Danny Alexander MP." No they're not - just an indication that they're living in the past or some sort of fantasy land!
fishcumnock
This could be a "FARAGE" moment . Either that or full blown Pelter's every day or every week from the 56. And don't let this drop till he gets pumped oot .

killiefaetheferry
Just been on 5live - Carmichael facing no action from the fibDums. James Naughtie trying to downplay it to Hosie, saying "but a lot of use were sceptical about whether the memo was true or not" ignoring the huge media storm that weekend, including the insinuation that the first minister herself was a liar for denying the story seems the Lib Dems are to take no disciplinary procedures as he is punished enough by not taking his severance pay
exile
Edit: In other words, the impact of the story is being minimised because ultimately it had no perceivable impact on the election outcome (except O&S), but remember at the time, if things had gone the other way - if it had been accepted as true - as carmichael intended - it would have blown a hole in the SNP/sturgeon bandwagon, the Labour spin of 'vote SNP get Tory' would seem vindicated, and NS would overnight go from star to pariah Edited May 23, 2015 by exile
giblet
Its disgusting. Clear move to downpay. The enquiry being cited as saying the report is valid is laughable. Because the civil servant was of good character there is no reason to believe the conversation took place but some parts may have been lost in translation. If this isnt a reason to resign as an MP then at least we know we are through the looking glass. All rules are off, time for as much disruption as possible at Westminster. King Of Paisley
Another classic example of the Establishment and Unionist parties circling the wagons to protect one of their own. Absolutely disgusting. Then again are we really surprised at this behaviour?

Then again are we really surprised at this behaviour? Naughtie even implied that it was almost just a bit of stushie on twitter (words to that effect) - as if the serious intelligent media were always sceptical and open minded on the original allegation, completely ignoring that (a) the story was all over the radio, tv and newspaper front pages, and (b ) that twittter is now a routine channel of government communication (e.g. PM announcing cabinet), and what public figures say on it counts as news
Khana Lagur
Carmichael is a despicable khunt. What does this pathetic stunt tell you about his desperate state of mind? But ignoring his selfish pathology for the time being, I'm dumbfounded that that civil service bosses can't see there's absolutely no link between an employee's 'good character' and shoddy workmanship. Why, if the report's author thought something might have been lost in translation, didn't they ask the parties to the conversation to clarify their statements for the sake of transparency and accuracy? I very much doubt that the conversation between Sturgeon and the French ambassador would have been conducted in anything other than English, so unless the civil servant's first language wasn't English, where could the 'lost in translation' excuse come from? Hopefully, some soft Unionists will start opening their eyes to what the self-serving UK establishment is all about. And shame on the people who voted for Carmichael if they are prepared to stay quiet on this.
