Declaring Sweden as winning compared to us (UK) is a bit like Florida pronouncing itself awesome compared to other US States before they went pear-shaped? Knew they weren't exactly NZ levels of control but hadn't appreciated they're sitting at 6,000 deaths from it with 10m population. Not sure how that compares with us as we're on 4500 where Covid is mentioned with 5.5m population. A bit crass but will be really interesting at the end of all this to see how the other Scandinavian countries managed it better than Sweden and how they in turn compare to us. Did you see the excess deaths for Yemen have been estimated: https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-yemen-graves/grave-counting-satellite-images-seek-to-track-yemens-covid-death-toll-idUSKBN27C3BT Was surprised its 'only' 2000 but must be down to other factors like folk not getting to an age anyway where it really takes hold. a nice distinction from the forced compliance. Swedes defo getting treated like adults more, but their whole culture differs from ours

It's a weird phenomenon. 3 of them just joined twitter this month. I first looked out for it cause someone showed all these Black American accounts voting for Trump were using stock images, same naming conventions and same language. In the absence of evidence that they're bots / paid trolls, you have to assume that they're genuine but couldn't be arsed finding a unique username, so just used Twitter's suggested one:

exile
Just had a thought. Imagine if COVID had come a year earlier. Theresa May would have been in charge. She would have been in her element. Grandstanding at the podium, with her serious statesman face, telling the country to stop being naughty, but time to behave, issuing lockdown after lockdown. She'd out-Sturgeon Sturgeon, playing the "we must be good, the country shall pull together" card. She'd probably hold her enemies close, entangle the 3 FMs in a tangly web of 4 nations red lines, maybe invite them to the podium and bind them into a UK-wide approach with a steely embrace. By acting more often and more decisively, she would make it harder for them to diverge. Insofar as a 4 nations approach would prevail, while allowing local differences, she would be able to say that devolution was working. She would have no hesitation in sacking erring ministers and getting shot of political enemies. Johnson would be toast. Or at most a minor character getting done for breaking household-hopping rules or something, having a house party with his dad. Cummings would be nowhere. Gove would be slithering around, maybe Emergency Minister for the 4 Nations. Brexit would maybe be put on hold for the national interest. Hard not to think that England, at least, would have had a better pandemic...

Appears to be genuine but retweets a load of stuff from the Scottish Tories and Scottish Labour to a lesser extent so fairly safe to assume that he's not going to vote for the SNP in May. Good indicators of bots are a low number of followers and following accounts and a large volume of tweets in a short period of time.

If her short leadership term was anything to go by, she set a world record for kicking the can down the road, so I don't think she'd have done any better than her successor did as neither seemed capable of taking quick action that would be unpopular but necessary. wee-toon-red
They’re doing the usual routine of leaking the plan to gauge public opinion before actually committing to a plan. Cowards.

Cowards. Seems this time its an actual leak rather than an off-the-record briefing. The fact that it was Sky and the Times that got it rather then the Telegraph or the Mail probably tends to support that. Still, this is what happens when you have a culture of anonymous briefings. phart
According to the experts i've been reading their worst case scenario projections have turned out to be way below what reality is showing atm. It's tricky as fuck to plot a course through this pandemic if you aren't willing to close borders, spend big on social programmes, have an effective track and trace system and follow the established scientific advice. Lockdowns are an indication that policy has failed. Compromising between economics and virus suppression means you get neither done it seems. You need to suppress the virus to save the economy, that's the causal order. Also how many weeks is it going to be in a lockdown, deaths are locked in for 4 or 5 weeks now, Folk (generally) who pass away start of December will be getting infected this weekend.
