The 90% is based on 94 people who have contracted the virus. I have a feeling it will be less than 90% once the vaccine starts being used on even bigger numbers of people. But even if it drops to 80% or even 70% it's still a huge breakthrough. I think it's the first time this technology has been used in humans and the safety aspects of this vaccine seem to be excellent. It's still early days though and, even if it does turn out to be even close to as good as Pfizer are saying, it's going to be quite a while before it's going to be widely available at a population level. By that time hopefully other vaccine candidates will also start to become available and there might be choices to be made about which vaccine will be best in which situation.

It's great news but still too early to start partying. This virus is going to ruin a lot more people's lives before we get it under control.

This technology might not just be a major breakthrough for COVID19 but could have major benefits for loads of other viruses too.

North Lanarkshire heading into tier 4 on Friday apparently and teaching unions discussing possible industrial action if Scotgov refuse to concede on blended learning.

There was dip in infections which timed up with half-term whether it was just coincidence or some other factor no way to tell.

Frankly I'm struggling to see the point of tier 3. It seems only capable of stabilising the situation not driving it down.

It isn't the tiers that drive it down it's how people behave.

The tiers are supposed to govern how people behave 🙅‍♂️

My point is that we seem to have extra levels of restriction which do neither one thing or another.

Boris allegedly been told to self isolate because he has allegedly been in contact with someone with covid. there is something really dodgy going on.

Deflect  deflect deflect. Are people really buying this shit ?

He is probably isolating in that fridge he hid in, and hogging the vaccine.

Boris seems to time his issues very well. Terribly good luck that man has.

Convenient or what? Think we can expect another couple of "self isolations" in January when all the Brexit shit starts kicking in.

Another virus..95%. Looking very promising indeed. Another 12 in stage 3 testing as well.

That the moderna one?

I ws listening to a podcast with David Baltimore (nobel prize in medicine for work on viruses) yesterday which was recorded back in the summer. He was describing all the different methods of vaccination which might work. Also stating that we should already have drug inhibitors for these types of viruses but the market methodology for science means they don't get done.

Do you know if this is another RNA type vaccination or is it another method? EDIT: just googled it, it's mRNA same as the other one.

He was very optimistic about vaccines getting made as well, saying the virus wasn't extraordinary and therefore should be able to be vaccinated against.

I'm impressed with how high these numbers are. It is new technology right enough. If they do turn out to be as good as they are hoping then this new technology could provide huge advances in lots of other areas as well.

I think the BioNtech one claimed "over 90%". if you look closer at the numbers it's actually 91.6%. The Russian one then claimed 92%. This Moderna one claims 94.5%.

There is also a Janssen one which is starting Phase 3 clinical trials today. It's based on the Ebola vaccine. Hundreds of folk in Dundee and Fife are involved in that one.

Plus loads of other ones at various stages of development.

It's starting to look very exciting on the vaccine front. Hopefully some, if not all, of them come good and save us from this horrible disease.

French professor faces disciplinary case over hydroxychloroquine claims

Didier Raoult stands accused of touting drug as a coronavirus treatment without evidence

No clinical trials have yet found in favour of using hydroxychloroquine against Covid-19, and critics say that due to potential serious side-effects, treating coronavirus patients with it is worse than no treatment at all.

In June, the British-led Recovery trial team said hydroxychloroquine did nothing to reduce coronavirus mortality.

A group representing 500 specialists of France’s Infectious Diseases Society (SPILF) filed a complaint with the national order of doctors of the Bouche-du-Rhône department, which includes Marseille, in July. They accused Raoult of breaking nine rules of the doctors’ code of ethics. Other doctors and patients have also lodged complaints.

Cracking maths skills here. It's beginning to become obvious why some folk are still head in the sand over Covid.

50,000 is of course 1% of 5,000,000 not 0.1%.

To try to highlight how far out his numbers are, the number of UK excess deaths is already higher than 0.1% of the entire UK population.
