Toepoke
That's a good idea, might put some of this nationalist shite to bed. Can't get more nationalist shite than a national anthem...
Bzzzz
Which part of England is Jerusalem in then? what about "Swing Low"? A dying slave dreaming of returning to his homeland... how beautifully "ironic"
Lamia
If they have an anthem Jerusalem is only okay if Billy Bragg sings it and not some toff/opera singer. I suspect Bragg's the only one who has a genuine interest in a different future
the_burger
Was at the Commonwealth games in Manchester, and when English athletes were getting a gold medal it was land of hope and glory. Think it would be a good anthem

Have to say I love it, it was my schools song, used to belt it out at the last whole school assembly of the year. So it was always a bit of get it sung then out the door for 6 weeks. irnbruman
Whatever pish they come up with ...I imagine it will still be roundly booed at the Scotland England games.
Flora MaDonald
...and N.I. will be the only ones belting out the Queen - how apt.
JECK
Personally, I think they should stop all the anthem bollox before ftbaw, rugger and other national sporting events. Time wasting nonsense for pissed up idiots. That being said had to laugh at folk emailing in sky news the day, "I'm passionate about being British therefore it should remain God save the queen". Ignorent berks to say the least.

I suspect Bragg's the only one who has a genuine interest in a different future That is quality. Always loved that song and thought it would be a good choice as a proper English anthem. Even better sung by Billy Bragg. Never seen that clip before
Marky
Whatever pish they come up with ...I imagine it will still be roundly booed at the Scotland England games. Completely disagree. Can only speak for myself, but in the past I've regularly booed GStQ, but I'd never boo a genuine English anthem. It's the song I booed. G-Man
Never heard the Billy Bragg version but it was excellent. If I was choosing I'd pick Land of Hope and Glory as I've always thought it was a great rousing sing a long. Jerusalem is beautiful and usually makes me cry for some reason. I've never booed an anthem but I'd now have to try and not join in the singing.
Toepoke
Land of Hope and Glory is very much a song of the British Empire so you'd probably get people making similar complaints about England using it in isolation as they are with GSTQ. Which part of England is Jerusalem in then? That's kind of the point of the song though innit?... Edited January 13, 2016 by Toepoke

Can only speak for myself, but in the past I've regularly booed GStQ, but I'd never boo a genuine English anthem. It's the song I booed. Aye maybe YOU wouldn't. Majority of our fans still would though. Anyway on topic, can't honestly say I had heard of Jerusalem until seeing that poll today. Step-faither, who is English, gives it his vote though. However it's worth noting, the also likes Dolly Parton, and is cowping my mother, so his opinion means less than all!!

People would wonder why they were singing the Rugby World Cup theme though...
