Orraloon
Very good speech. Do you think so? Apart from repeating the words "socialist" and "radical" a few times, I don't think she said very much. In the past repeating those words often enough might have been enough to get folk on her side, but I'm not sure that works anymore. It still seems to work on some folk but possibly not enough. You actually have a point there, not on Katy's speech though which was superb. But you've certainly got a point on what "what works" or what voters are looking for. The SNP are widely regarded as a progressive force in Scotland by many despite, not opposing zero hour contracts, refusing to lend support to repeal the Thatcher anti Union laws, and supporting blacklisting. I've actually got no idea to suggest what a Socialist would have to say/do to gain support in Britain/Scotland but it seems that it's no longer enough to support the working class. It's a bizarre logic that thinks clapping is out of order but shouting "rubbish" over the top of someone speaking is acceptable.

Damo
Applause in the House of Commons -certainly not on. Scenes not seen since erm March and the last sitting before the election actually: "Mr Walker said he had attended Mr Hague's leaving drinks this week, spending 20 minutes saying goodbye to his special adviser and speaking to Deputy Commons Leader Tom Brake and Chief Whip Michael Gove, "all of whom would have been aware of what was going on". He said: "I have been played as a fool and when I go home tonight I will look in the mirror and see an honourable fool looking back at me and I would much rather be an honourable fool in this and any other matter than a clever man." Labour MPs got to their feet and gave the Tory MP a round of applause" I can't see Tory MPs Burns reaction in the media anywhere but I assume he was fuming given there was an actual debate going on at the time

ErsatzThistle
Simon Burns MP seems like a bloody nice bloke according to his Wikipedia article.......... In 2007, Burns successfully proposed to the House of Commons Administration Committee, of which he was then a member, that Members of Parliament should have "priority access" to services within the Parliamentary Estate. In practice, this meant that MPs could avoid queues for shops, restaurants, bars, computers, photocopiers and even toilets by "pushing in" ahead of visitors or staff. The so-called "queue jumping rule" provoked cross-party opposition from Commons staff and other MPs but Burns trenchantly defended the proposal. On 3 April 2008, Burns was involved in a collision with a cyclist as he drove his 4x4 out of the Palace of Westminster into Parliament Square. The cyclist, British Army Major Stuart Lane, was thrown over the handlebars of his bicycle and broke two vertebrae in his neck "which could hinder his Army career". In February 2009 Burns pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving and was fined £400 with £200 costs at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court. In June 2010, Burns was forced to issue what one journalist called "a grovelling apology" after calling Commons speaker John Bercow a "stupid sanctimonious dwarf." Burns was one of the few MPs to refuse to shake the Speaker’s hand when he took the oath of allegiance and his remarks were branded "derogatory" by the primordial dwarfism medical charity, Walking with Giants Foundation who expressed very serious concern about the negative influence of the remarks from someone in Burns' position. In November 2011, Burns compared members of the campaigning group 38 Degrees to zombies, this led thousands of complaints and an open letter to Burns with over 85,000 signatures. In January 2013, Burns, the minister overseeing rising rail fares, was revealed to be making use of a ministerial car instead of travelling the 35 miles from his home to London by train. He claimed this was because he was not allowed to read sensitive papers on the train, but this claim was immediately contradicted by the Cabinet Office. The cost to the taxpayer was estimated to be £80,000 per annum. There's still a snuff box and hooks in the cloakroom for you can hang your sword on at Westminster. The amount of stupid archaic rules they maintain down there is ridiculous.
Orraloon
If the 56ers do nothing more than continually highlight all the absolute mental nonsense that goes on in the HoC then that would probably be worth it on it's own. For entertainment value if nothing else. I'm sure they will do other stuff as well but there is no reason why they can't rip the pish out out of all the daft traditions and procedures at the same time. It would be worth somebody getting suspended every now and again just to give publicity to all the nonsense that goes on. These toffy nosed twats just treat the HoC as an extension of their toffy nosed public school days. Time all that nonsense was challenged. Time to modernise our system of government. stocky
When Scottish Question Time crops up with Scotland's only Tory MP being questioned by Scotland's only Labour MP they should make sure they continually question what possible basis the two of them have to govern or constitute the official opposition in relation to Scotland. Let's expose Westminster for exactly what it is... they should just leave the chamber and let the tory talk to the labour guy all alone and by themselves... Just an aside, but the SG has retained check-off for its staff and facility time for its TU reps, unlike the other mob. I never knew about the blacklisting though; do tell. It's refreshing that they've evidently endevoured to be socially inclusive rather than perpetuating the class divisions that undermine the social fabric of the UK. It just one of those lovely tales of expedience that the Scottish Government like to tell. They say that the Scottish Government won't offer public service contracts to companies who use blacklisting... But they do, often. There was a case recently in... Dundee I think it was were Unions were outraged because the government rushed through a large contract to a prime offender so it couldn't be scrutinised. Of course this and all the rest of the expedience such as "we support the living wage"... "We oppose austerity" and "we absolutely aren't evil neoliberal douches" can be explained away by saying "But Labour...", "But Westminster..." Or my personal favourite "EU regulations... Which we passionately support, prevent".
