In January 2021, he asked to step down as Director of Common Weal for the role of Head of Strategic Development. This happened after receiving backlash for a highly critical article he wrote about Nicola Sturgeon in connection with the ongoing row with Alex Salmond. In January 2021, Robin McAlpine changed role to head up strategic development for the organisation and the board appointed Amanda Burgauer as Interim Director to lead a program of organisational change. Amanda was appointed as Executive Director in a permanent role in December 2021. Common Weal is a company limited by guarantee. At the AGM on March 21st 2022, the members elected the following Directors: Robin McAlpine So looks as if they have re-appointed him

He’s “head of Strategic Development” whatever that is, was removed as editor a couple of years ago as Ally mentioned. Essentially shunted sideways. I’m not sure what the legal status of Common Weal is but as McAlpine was the founder it might be difficult to sack him.
Ally Bongo
I wonder if anyone "credible" is going to announce they are standing And by credible i mean nobody who is an MSP at Holyrood Or is it really the case that it's a Matt Busby/Alex Ferguson moment in that the next appointment is bound to fail expectations and they dont want to be that ? Im still heart set on voting for The Forbes though ..............

Ally Bongo
Do you need a number of endorsements to go to the members vote ?

You need 100 nominations from members from 20 branches. That’s a total of 100, not 100 from each branch. Any member can nominate and you can nominate more than one. MSPs and MPs are treated as members. The number of MSP/MP endorsements - particularly MSP - endorsements is important because it indicates who much support any candidate has within the parliamentary groups, for example, anyone voting for Ash Regan right now would have to think about how she’d be able to be a leader if she’s no support from any of the MSPs - it’s not like she can suddenly sack them all and get new ones in. AlfieMoon
Glad to see Forbes taking aim back at Swinney. If she rides this out and proves herself to the membership then she has an opportunity to go from strength to strength. It could be the making of her and this up-front SNP battle would all seem like old news by the time any opposition parties get round to trotting it out. I've talked to a few SNP members since the weekend and whilst one was very vehemently anti -Forbes, I think overall most were quite positive and would have her as the preferred candidate. hampden_loon2878
The snp are going to lose votes regardless of who wins this, unless someone else stands,, it’s whose vote are we to lose. The fringe right or your reasonable ”older” members/voters sturgeon now intervening,, why does than not surprise me
