slasher
I've heard SNP members talk more about independence in the last 24 hours than throughout the whole campaign which is encouraging. Let's do this 🏴🏴🏴

This should be funny. I am going to bookmark this post as it should be a good marker for lolz over the next five years.

thplinth
Had a look on wings... Two seats! ohhhh man. 1.1 millions votes for two seats... well that's genius. But not just any old two seats... oh no. (I honestly don't think people realize just how funny the next five years are going to be.) Dawn Of The Imbeciles Posted on May 09, 2021 by Rev. Stuart Campbell The SNP collected slightly over 1 million list votes in Thursday’s election, which nevertheless elected just two list MSPs because SNP voters care about power for the SNP rather than about independence, and chose to let dozens of Unionist MSPs get seats rather than other pro-indy parties. But the bigger tragedy is that one of those two was Emma Roddick. Roddick (pictured above left, with infamously loathsome narcissist horrorshow Fiona Robertson) is a truly epic idiot, and if we were to start telling you why we’d end up with a post longer than this one. She only got to the top of the SNP list rankings because she has a mental illness called Borderline Personality Disorder, and readers can decide for themselves if its symptoms sound like good traits for a politician to have: If her opening salvo as an elected representative is anything to go by, her unfortunate constituents are in for a rough few years. Now, firstly that isn’t a disappointment because Joji is almost as appalling an idiot as Roddick, but more to the point the tweet is based on a quite spectacularly brainless misunderstanding of how the list vote works, which is a bit disturbing from someone elected by the list vote. It’s based on this table (sorry for the poor image quality): What Roddick has done, because she’s less intelligent than cheese on toast, is assume that because the SNP lost out to Labour for the last list seat in the North-East region by around 6500 votes, and Alba got a little over 8000 votes, then if Alba’s votes had gone to the SNP the SNP would have won the seat (and an overall majority). But that’s not how the list works. It’s not a Single Transferable Vote system. The Alba votes would have been added at the START of the calculation process, and would immediately have been divided by 10 (along with the rest of the SNP vote, as you can see) because the SNP won nine constituency seats in the region. So they’d only have added 819 votes to the SNP’s total, and the SNP would still have been in fourth place, thousands of votes behind Labour, the Tories and the Lib Dems for the last seat. Anyone who’s read even a couple of sentences about the Holyrood electoral system would know that. (To win the seat the SNP would in fact have needed over 210,000 list votes in the region, or 65,000 more than they actually got.) But this, it breaks our hearts to tell you, is entirely typical of the standard of box-ticking identity-politics bonehead the SNP have chosen to carry the independence flame in this Parliament (because several others also made the same claim). We’ll all be lucky if they don’t burn the place to the ground with it in the first week.
thplinth
So for the wo/man on the street that is 550,000 SNP regional votes to elect Emma Roddick. I am going to have to go out for a bit or I could die laughing. (I thought that was just a saying until now.)
Caledonian Craig
Can Wings post on what happened to Eck please? Can they let us know how the wholly one could only pull on just over 5,000 votes in his own backyard? I await how it is all SNP's fault that Eck could not appeal to voters in his own neighbourhood given that he is the messiah after all. Caledonian Craig
Ah we have the latest excuse for the results yesterday. It was voters saying thanks to NS for her handling of the pandemic and nothing to do with independence support. thplinth
So ALBA were bang on the money folks. They said that the 1.100,000 SNP regional votes would be effectively wasted and would only result in 1-2 additional SNP MSPs. That is exactly what has happened. Almost perfectly. So what they also said was true. Had just 50% of those 1.100.000 SNP regional votes voted ALBA it would have netted 20-25 additional Pro-independence ALBA MSPs. On top of the 62 constituency SNP MSPs. (Plus the Greens as well if you want to include them.) This would have been a supermajority of pro-independence MSPs. Instead you don't have even an outright majority of pro-independence MSPs, and even with the Greens it is razor thin, which when you factor in turnout wont amount to fuck all when it comes to pushing Boris for independence. You are facing five years of fuck all, that is your victory here. There is not even any point in arguing about it anymore, it is done now. Sad to see so called independence supporters caring more for yesterday man AS and the bigot WoS than celebrating a great night for the independence parties. Absolutely pathetic that that are more against the SNP than the bloody tories.

They have to account for their performance (or lack of) but it really does mirror their belief in Salmond. They are in denial. Yes I forecast this outcome the other day. It is a very complicated situation. Also people should bear in mind the differences between now and 2011 when our win got a referendum. Back then David Cameron was PM who was far more open to democracy and was far more flexible. The Tory regime at Westminster now are far more right-wing and resemble more of a dictatorship hence how much harder getting a referendum now. The harsh truth is Westminster hold all the legal cards as its written into laws created in 1997 I think it was about what powers Holyrood have. Sadly, any referendum is Westminster's call. thplinth
Even with a supermajority it was possibly not going to be enough. But with this... it is nowhere nearly enough. Why? because almost nothing has changed as a result of this election., what two extra SNP MSPs and one short of a majority... I am sure Boris will be shitting himself. Nothing has changed, so nothing will change.

thplinth
ALBA said vote SNP1/ALBA2. If people had we would have a whopping supermajority right now. But even that might not have been enough for the reason that it was still based around the same vote, but it would have been a hell of a lot stronger and better than what we have now, i.e. exactly the same dead-end status quo that we have had for the last five years. The SNP said vote SNP1/SNP2. Of course, they knew it was stupid and futile but it was more important to them to kill off Alex Salmond, even if it killed off our chances of indyref2. They have succeed in doing both for the foreseeable future. I guess if you were happy with the last five years you will be happy with the next five. I wonder if this thread will still be going then. What are we now into year 6 of it. It is amazing how the same trick keeps on working...
