Croatia vs England

Draw would be good. I’m thinking 1-1.
The way that the group has been scheduled for us is as good as we could hope for.

Czechs first, perhaps the “easiest” game we will play out of the 3, at Hampden.

Then England who will play on the front foot, susceptible to the counter?

Then finally Croatia, again at Hampden, 3rd game in 9 days will hopefully take its toll on an ageing Croatia and Hampden is a very big pitch.
A draw today between Croatia and England would be a good result for us. If we can beat the Czechs, we’re top of the group going into the England match with the pressure and expectation on them to attack and dominate.

You'd think a draw would be the best outcome, to take a point out of the group and keep it tight.

On the other hand depending how the group turns out it could be a dreadful result for us!

Not sure I understand you here.
Id like Croatia and England to draw, I think that would be the best result for us.

If for example we were to beat Croatia but lose the other 2 games. Croatia's point could eliminate us.

Ah I see, I think it’s generally accepted that we will need 4 points minimum to progress from the group. I don’t want England to win today, i don’t want them coming into the game against us full of confidence

A Croatia win strikes me as the best result for us bearing in mind how the other fixtures pan out.

Croatia win and I'd expect them to beat the Czechs in their second game and they'd have qualified by the time they come to play us and they'd be sure to rest a few players and increase our chances of a result against them. Also if England lose today the pressure will be immense on them against us but if we win V Czechs then it may see Clarke try to park the bus with his formation against England which would be a bad idea.

An England win today and Croatia will need a result against us in the last game definitely. They'll be fired up and all guns blazing. On a side note England play a pressing game and press high up the pitch. That may be blunted today with temperatures forecast to hit around the high 80s low 90s.

A draw would leave Croatia needing something against us in the last game and England needing a win against us so that scenario doesn't really help us.

I think I agree. Your reasoning is very sound. Worst result a convincing England win.

Funny how even from a cold calculating perspective it still works out best if England draw or get beat. I suppose it’s just the way the universe is.

Hard to say at this stage but England beating Croatia and Czech Republic might help us. Croatia win, while putting a lot of pressure on England against us could be the worst result.

I think England beating both Croatia and Czech Republic is best result leaving the rest of us to fight it out. Croatia could be tired by the time they come to us and give us a small benefit, all the flying in and out the UK  wont help them.

I dont think we will get anything from Wembley so I think England need to beat the other teams too.
If Croatia win today I think it piles more pressure on us tomorrow to get a win as I think most teams will feel England will be the most difficult game .

But as Toepoke says, its up to us to get the results we need. I hope the crowd gives the team a full backing  tomorrow and dont get frustrated. Part of me feels one of the reasons we ground out results the past year is the lack of fans putting pressure on.

That's a fair point Craig re having the Croats coming to Hampden already through.

Basically the way I see it is there are pros and cons to every outcome today. At the end of the day it's up to us to get the results we need.

Exactly. We won’t actually know if today’s result suits us or not until the rest of the group pans out.

The players and Steve Clarke will not be worrying about what happens today. They just need to concentrate on tomorrow’s game and what happens in the other games will take care of itself.

The one thing I would agree on is a convincing England win would give them a huge boost. I don’t think their confidence is at its highest at the moment and we could do with keeping it that way ahead of Friday.

I would never wish England well but i certainly don't want them to lose this one and play us needing a win. Anything that keeps them over-confident and complacent for Friday would be good.

It could work the other way though. If they do lose today and need a win on Friday they will be under huge pressure which will only build and build if they don’t score early against us.

Indeed and this is a young England team so they will be really under the pump if they lose today. A young squad might not be able to cope with that pressure.

I'm thinking along those lines too.  England tend to start tournaments quite slowly but a defeat or even just a bellow par performance today could be a kick up the arse for them when they play us.

Anyway, I've put this one down as a draw on my predictor, so that's what I'm hoping for!

Incidentally, there are rumours on Twitter about England's team selection today that have angered some of their fans.  Apparently Southgate will play Trippier at left-back - which seems odd considering he has two specialist left-backs in his squad - and plans to start Sterling, who isn't in the best of form, instead of Grealish or Sancho.

It’s not a rumour anymore. The team has been announced and Trippier and Sterling do start.

I have no idea which formation they will use though.

Supposedly, a flat back four. Rice and Phillips a more holding role in midfield behind the more attacking Mount, Foden and Sterling with Kane up front.

Surely we want a Croatia win, and hope that they're already qualified by the time we play them?

That way they'll rest players against us.

5 years ago Ireland qualified for the last 16 by beating the Italy B team, who didn't look interested at all. I remember Buffon celebrating with the Irish players at the final whistle, which was a bit bizarre.

Can see England chasing shadows in midfield and in that  heat it’ll take its toll.

Croatia 11/2 on Bet365 seems generous

Yeah. Not a great matchup for them.

Leeds United and West Ham vs Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
