Belgium are here to win the whole thing, if they don't rest 11 players I will be surprised. I think the better chance comes from Denmark getting something against Russia and Russia finishing third on three or four points with a -2 goal difference. romanticscot
Here are the tie breaker rules for 3rd place teams Rules for classification: 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored; 4) Wins; 5) Lower disciplinary points total; 6) European Qualifiers overall ranking. Mount should have been booked against us! 1 minute ago, romanticscot said: That scenario I believe it goes to who has scored the most, then who has conceded less and then some funky penalty shoot out that I have no idea how the logistics of that would happen but truthfully it's better than pulling a team fae a hat. Well at least we'd both be in the UK at the time. That would be hella exciting. I doubt that's ever happened before.

Same points, same goals scored, conceded and against the same teams? Unlikely, I know, but there is still a small chance we could finish ahead of England in 2nd place. I just double checked, penalties would only be necessary for individual group placement. The 3rd place league it doesn't happen, see my post above foe tie breaker rules. Third Lanark
Right, let's beat croatia 2-0. We can do it. Wales beat Italy 2002, RoI once beat Italy, NI beat Ukraine, Spain in the world Cup 1982 I think. High time we beat a higher ranked nation in a tournament. exile
Finland Belgium game to be played in St Petersburg. It's closer from Helsinki to St Petersburg than Glasgow-London. Not quite a home game, but Finland will have a fighting chance of getting a point there. They only need to do what we did to England. Contain them. They don't have to score. This from Wikipedia page:- Tiebreakers If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following tie-breaking criteria are applied:[1] Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question; Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question; Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question; If, after having applied criteria 1 to 3, teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams who are still level to determine their final rankings.[a] If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 10 apply; Superior goal difference in all group matches; Higher number of goals scored in all group matches; Higher number of wins in all group matches;[b] If on the last round of the group stage, two teams are facing each other and each has the same number of points, as well as the same number of goals scored and conceded, and the score finishes level in their match, their ranking is determined by a penalty shoot-out. (This criterion is not used if more than two teams have the same number of points.); Lower disciplinary points total in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card); Higher position in the European Qualifiers overall ranking. romanticscot
Interesting that the penalty shoot out only comes into it if both teams are playing each other in the 3rd match day, then discipline comes into it and then highest ranking. Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question; Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question; Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question; If, after having applied criteria 1 to 3, teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams who are still level to determine their final rankings.[a] If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 10 apply; Superior goal difference in all group matches; Higher number of goals scored in all group matches; Higher number of wins in all group matches;[b] If on the last round of the group stage, two teams are facing each other and each has the same number of points, as well as the same number of goals scored and conceded, and the score finishes level in their match, their ranking is determined by a penalty shoot-out. Caledonian Craig
So they'd only use a penalty shoot-out if we were playing each other in the last game which is not the case so then number 9 comes into it.
ceudmilefailte
On a more positive note it is now impossible for us not to qualify if we win by 2 goals.
GaryWood34
This is went mad tonight in here. We don’t need to beat Croatia 2-0 yet. Im almost certain 4 points will be enough despite GD. Total panic mode from folk. Wait til 10pm tomorrow before totally shitting yourselves. Edited June 20, 2021 by GaryWood34

Ah okay. So it would only be penalties if we were playing each other in the last match. What a shame, that would have been orgasmic (in that 1 in a million chance of the scores ending up that way)
