We must have more players in the EPL now than at any time since its inception, apart from possibly the very early days.

Yeh we defo have more Scots than a few years ago but reality is that most have had to work there way up there and not many have gone straight there from the spl.(minus celtic)

My points are bang on the money. Its a fact that epl clubs will no longer buy from non old firm clubs. They deem the spl to be to far below the standard required. Its English championship clubs that now take an interest in spl players.

I agree there is a few more Scottish epl players than maybe 5 or 6 years ago but most of these players got there through different pathways. Most never went from straight from spl clubs(barring celtic) to an epl club.

Mcginn went to English champ, mcburnie came up from the English champ, same with fleck, cairney, Snodgrass, Cooper, Fraser, ritchie.

We have gilmour, mctominay and Bardsley who came through at epl clubs. Burke came from the bundesliga to the epl.

Tierney and Armstrong came from celtic who have proven over last 9 years that they are way above the spl by the fact they won 4 trebles in a row.

The 2 guys who went from the spl straight to the epl are robertson and mcarthur and both of those players did so over 7 years ago.

Its a worrying trend for the future of the spl that smaller English championship and even league1 clubs can now poach whoever they want with from the spl with relative ease.

You're quite right. We've never had any difficulty producing players considered good enough to hack it in England's second and third tiers - many have excelled down there - but moving straight from the SPFL to the EPL is a different story.

It didn't used to be - up until the 1990s it was quite common for English top tier clubs to sign players from our Premier League - but like Malcolm says, the SPFL is now considered too poor a standard to risk it. The only time it tends to happen now is when someone is genuinely head and shoulders above the rest, like Kieran Tierney or, although he obviously isn't Scottish, Virgil Van Dijk.

Is it not also ther case that England are playing in a whole different market from the 80's ,90s where mostly ever team where filled with British players. Scotland was  always the first place they looked too cause it was easier to recuit players.

With the billions of tv money they can now afford to recruit the top foreign talent, so no wonder only the few best Scots end up there.

I would say even the 90s it was more common than now, you had guys like Kevin gallacher, callum Davidson, eoin jess, Stephen glass going from the spl to the epl.

You also had Scott booth and Paul lambert going from Aberdeen to borussia dortmund lol. Could you imagine that happening nowadays.

Exactly.

And many more In the youth teams of big clubs.

We also have an 18 year old defender playing every week in Serie A & two young players highly rated in Bayern’s youth team.

Hickey Isn't playing every week. On the bench last three weeks and didn't come on today when Bologna hooked their starting left back.

Started 9 of their 20 league games which is 9 more than Billy Gilmour has, plus he's younger.

Nice to have two top league teenagers but we don't half get carried away.

All true.

Atleast we have glimmers of hope to get carried away about now though.

Gilmour surely a must now for a loan deal. Left out of both Tuchel's matches with Tuchel making passing comments about him having to 'bulk up'.

Definitely needs to get out the club on loan & tbh that statement says it all about Tuchel.

His build seemed okay in all his appearances where he bossed it & received all the praise.

Hopefully this West Ham/Palace/West Brom loan happens.

A permanent move would be even better if that is Tuchel's mindset.

Yeah agreed. There shouldn’t be any shortage of teams keen to take him on loan atleast.

The only worry is - this is Chelsea. Buy from them is like shopping at the shop local to them - Harrods. Gilmour has played a handful of games but I am betting Chelsea won't let him go cheap at all and it may put clubs off.
