thplinth
I do like the way it seems to be 1500-3000 per day now regularly. Any political party in the UK would be ecstatic at this. But for a national party with a small population it is even more impressive. Let's just keep chipping away and see where it goes. Next stop 200%. After that the 80,000 mark... Redz
The SNP would have been budgeting for around 300 grand in membership contributions this year. The extra members means that amount will be closer to, or over, a £million. If everyone was to renew next year then the SNP's war chest to fight the elections will be considerable....more than all the other parties put together by quite a distance. What would an average monthly contribution be - £5 (I'm guessing)? 80,000 (Lets say) x £5 is £400k a month - Or am I (Quite possibly) missing something? Would most make one off payments or go with a monthly DD, I'm not sure?

Redz
Minimum fee of £12 a year. Yes, minimum - A higher monthly contribution can be made though. How many will have chose say £5 a month (Which isn't unreasonable to think surely?) rather than the £1 minimum? That's all I was kinda getting at, in that it could (Will?) be significantly more than £1m pa.
Orraloon
How much are the SNP going to have to pay on posting stuff to all those extra members? I hope their subs cover the bills! Most of it is done by Email. Even with Royal mail's inflated prices you get a fair amount of postage for the minimum £12 membership fee. This is something that they wont be worried about. Orraloon
I still cannot get over the point of this. I'm no sure I would want you as a golf partner. You are sounding like a quitter. If you are 4 down with 4 to play, do you just give up? No, you don't. You just concentrate on winning the next hole. Extra membership doesn't mean extra votes but it does provide extra funds to fight the next campaign.
thplinth
25,000 people in the SNP on the 18th. That took 60 years. 75,000 now 10 days later. This new 50,000 are not just a blood transfusion they are a body transplant. What we are about to witness is a new never to be the same again SNP. That is why you are joining. Hertsscot
What are they going to be posting to us? Don't know, never been a member of a political party before, thats why I thought I'd ask. I don't expect to get a SSC package though (thank goodness!)

I personally pay £13 a month, the wife, when she joins, will be paying £5 per month and a guy I work with chips in £30 a month, so you're correct in your assumption. the_fadiator
But guess that's in the context of generally higher political party membership rates across the piece

I don't expect to get a SSC package though (thank goodness!) You will get your membership card and regular newsletters (I think you can opt out of them if you want and get them online instead?). In general though the unit cost will be less for 75,000 than for 25,000. So more money for campaigning stuff.

Brilliant. I was hoping to have a Scottish passport by 2016, but I'll settle for my SNP card by then. Even with backlog.
Big Dod
I think it is brilliant that folk actually care. 70000 (plus 10000 greens SSP) people who want to give a small part of their lives to a cause is outsanding. Our imperial masters are bricking it right now.

Armchair Bob
Interesting to note that a year ago, UKIP's Tory defector, Douglas Carsewell, claimed that Conservative Party membership was probably below 100,000. (The Conservatives no longer reveal how many members they have so nobody knows for sure.) The SNP now have over 75,000 members. It is not impossible that over the next month or so, the SNP will become the second largest party in the UK by membership.

I read somewhere (can't find the source) that SNP membership in the 1970s was 120k! People used to be more party-political engaged back in the day when there were actual differences between parties...
