hampden_loon2878
To me the restriction will just force people into crowded house holds, folk round to watch football and take in the new year.Ā
phart
Just to reiterate SA have more deaths in less population than us(UK) despite the mean age being considerably lower than ours. They have 40% of the total counted deaths in the whole of Africa. Their excess deaths have been estimated as high as 280k for the entire pandemic. From the economist excess mortality piece "Among developing countries that do produce regular mortality statistics, South Africa shows the grimmest picture" https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker I'd not hold them up as a comparison of how to effectively mitigate a public health crisis. That being said there is of course many factors in this, they also have a much larger immunocompromised population due to other epidemics circulating in the country. Their omicron wave ostensibly appears to have not been anywhere near as deadly as the previous 3 waves, especially their last delta one. We're going to get plenty of data in the next 3 weeks. hampden_loon2878
It really does come across like those under a certain age are ādoneā with the restrictions, bars seem to be pretty much ignoring restriction guidelines, bars stapped to the gunnels which is actually good to see. i notice the difference in attitude with my mother and father, they are wary of going out and socialising, get under the age of fifty and they dont give a shitĀ

Lamia
The UK Government have a history of waiting for the data before acting and then it has meant restrictions have come in too late and have been required for longer. They haven't changed that approach this time. If it actually pays off this time it won't be because of good judgement and overall it will remain a disastrous strategy. I really hope it turns out that things are much better this time but that won't make the UK Government right.

You cant just keep on doing that every time theres a variant, every country is different and the UK population have stepped up more than most in vaccination percentages.Ā As you say yourself, every country is different and so they are implementing different restrictions Ā Germany cut stadium capacity by 50% a month ago, theyāve been on a winter break for a week so no need to do anything more at the moment in that regard. Ā Clubs and discos are closed, there are more stringent measures on how many people unvaccinated can meet.Ā Wales are fully BCD for sport, Holland is on a full lockdown. Ā A number of EU countries have placed severe restrictions on people travelling from the UK. Ā Ireland allow crowds of 5000 but pubs are shut from 8 pm. In England, the government has said, maybe put a mask on if you feel like it but we wonāt be enforcing it and be alert. You get the picture.Ā
phart
1 hour ago, ParisInAKilt said: Fingers crossedĀ looks good, the problem is the 14 year diifference in mean age, which isn't being factored into the comparison. 2.3% chance of hospitalisation at 27 (for males) 5% at 40. https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/covid-pandemic-mortality-risk-estimator So just putting the rough calculation in using mean, and that isn't actual size of say 60+ demographs, it's a different picture, All this will have been factored in by the mathematicians in charge of trying to predict what is going to happen. Obviously atm we're looking good as well due the immunity wall we've already built and also seeing preliminary reports that omicron infection actually provides protection against delta too which is really good news as well. DAVIDB46
With leitch saying today that they expected peak of case numbers late January early February , tells you there will be no return to crowds mid January . whilst we focus on case numbers here as opposed to the outcome of them nothing will change here
Orraloon
I'm in favour of the more cautious approach, which is partly due to the fact that I'm a wee bit older and therefore more likely to die if I catch it. In my younger days I wouldn't have been so keen on too many restrictions. But even then, not being allowed to go to the football in the middle of winter, wouldn't even have registered on my scale on "minor inconvenience". Now, if this had happened to me, I would be very pissed off. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-59808620 But even that is fairly minor in the overall scheme of things. vanderark14
There's only one rule I don't really understand. It's because you are a close contact of somebody else who has tested positive. You might turn positive in a few days time, or you may never get it at all. None of the rules are perfect. They can't be made perfect as there are too many unknowns. They make the rules based on what they think will reduce the number of infections overall. The rules are being made by fallible people who don't have all the answers or all of the data they would like to have. This is one of the reasons why different counties have different rules.
