PASTA Mick
A wins a win but I can't see us getting another point in this campaign. Netherlands and Ukraine away and then England at home. Very tricky without Morgan, Mcburnie and Burke.
bazmidd
Scotland played well to score 3 goals considering Andorra just sat deep the whole game, very mature and patient display. Can clearly see the talent Gilmour and Johnston have. Gilmour glides along the park constantly finds space to receive the ball when there was very little given from Andorra. Our second goal was great play. Hornby is a talent and Johnston has so much potential, very positive and these 3 boys are 19 and
BraveheartGordon
Porteus and Bates with McCrorie sitting in front is really solid at 21’s level and I’d like to see that pairing tested against the stronger sides, Hornby has potential to be our first really regular 21’s goalscorer since Rhodes and we don’t lack midfield talent at this level either (I really rate Gilmour and think he’s destined for the top). Wasn’t a sparkling performance but quite excited to see how this group develops especially with so many players missing tonight. Would be good to have a competitive 21’s group for the first time in a long while, it’s been our biggest problem as a national set-up. Johnston likes to cut in and drag full-backs inside and Middleton is more old fashioned and bombs down the line to deliver with a natural left out. Its a nice thought that maybe these 2 will provide different types of options on that side in years to come perhaps even going into the senior set-up. And we can change depending on the opposition we are up against.

Bearing in mind Johnston has played on the right recently for Celtic and both these lads still only being 19 they will potentially be Scotland's wingers for the next U21s campaign as well. How did the U19s get on anyway?
bazmidd
Just had a quick look and they beat Poland 3-1. Great result for the U19s. What I notice about the Scotland Youth Squads now is everytime I look at the squads it is always the same names from U17s right up to U21s. I know this would appear obvious as the best players are usually in the squads. But it seems Scotland are now focusing properly on a talented group and guiding them through the age levels instead of the old scatter gun approach of trying anyone and everyone and picking just whoever's playing decent at the time. They are now keeping faith with a talented group they have identified from U17s. Middleton, Rudden, McInroy, Johnston, Church, Aitchison have been in the same Scotland teams from U17s and next year they will be the U21s team. The, along with Gilmour, there is some real talent there. They just need to take the next step of qualifying for an U21s tournament as they have qualified for a couple of tournaments at U17s and U19s level

mccaughey85
We have obviously seen false dawn's before but the young players coming through at youth level look really good. Guys like gilmour and Johnston are looking like real talents. There is a good few other guys like Hornby, mccrorie, Middleton who also look like they could play at a good level. Hopefully we can maximize potential as that is often the problem with our young players.

The main progression in the last few years at youth level is in technical ability.....gone are the days we would solely rely on physicality at the age groups before finally getting found out at under 21 and senior level. How often in the past have Scotland teams, at any level, dominated possession against a Spain or a Germany? This is happening regularly now. The other aspect is that a lot of the players are young for their age groups. This has played a big part in their development, technically and physically. Definitely this - in my view the technical ability of the current youth teams, especially those who have come through the performance school system (u17s) is exceptional in comparison to previous generations. KirkieRobRoy
Thought they struggled to break down the bus-parking Andorrans and there were some wobbles when they opened up a bit and created chances early in the second half. On the whole solid enough, but not boding well for the England game next month. We need a few performances like the one against Netherlands at home but iirc half that team are now in the seniors.
