johnnie x
I don't know if he is right or wrong but the media portrayed him as the only authority on reserves and his opinion was given undue prominence.

neilser
He's lost the plot. His Union Terrace Gardens project which was essentially going to cost Aberdeen City Council £200m got booted out - it was a massive vanity project which involved a shopping centre, hotels, restaurants etc being built where we have a perfectly good city centre park in Aberdeen. He's now all over the front page of the Press and Journal bemoaning the fact that the project got kicked out but at the same time he's predicting that there will be problems with surplus capacity in hotels, pubs, restaurants, offices and shopping centres no later than 2030. So on the one hand he's saying that his project to have more hotels, restaurants and shopping centres in Aberdeen should have gone ahead, whilst at the same time he's saying that even if things remain as they are just now we're going to have surplus capacity for hotels, restaurants and shopping centres shortly. Like I say - lost the plot...
Och Aye
http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-29342142?SThisFB The last paragraph tells how inaccurate predictions were.
caledonian1
At the launch of the Wood Review in April he went on about the potential 26 bn boe and that the oil and gas industry was for those in the audience, their kids and their subsequent kids. Then before the referendum he basically said the 26 bn boe was exaggerated and that there was no great long term future for oil and gas in Scotland. I was in the audience at a business breakfast where he said those things ins April - even took notes....believe it is / was on video on the oil and gas uk website. Agree with all Neilser says about UTG project. No need nor desire for it and building further shopping outlets so is about the last thing Aberdeen needs. For the council to take on extra debt would have been madness He is a severe hypocrite

UPROAR
the whole concept he is pushing of decline and managed decline is incredibly dishonest. Almost every industry sector is in 'managed decline' - look at any business text book. The smartphone industry is in managed decline and wont exist in 35yrs never mind 50 years. Do you hear senior execs talking about the decline of that industry ? nope it would be silly and irresponsible....
thplinth
They have been talking about the oil running out since the late 70's at least. I knew a canadian driller in Aberdeen who used to quote a book he had read saying it was shite and that they would find more and more oil globally. Everything he predicted has come true. edit and this was the early 80's he was saying that. Edited September 26, 2014 by thplinth
