jockodile
I was speaking to an English chap in the pub the other day who suddenly now is worried about a Yes vote. He said that losing Scotland would be bad and when I asked him why he said that Scots are good soldiers and they would miss that. Being excellent cannon fodder is one of our greatest attributes apparently. It's not that the establishment are bothered about. It is Trident and the potential impact on the seat in the security council. The UK Foreign Office will have a meltdown when that last echo of Empire is finally silenced. Ex-Whitfield
So, after eck calling out the treasury for the leak and the treasury responding with a 'so what', we have another statement from eck. “The head of the UK civil service has confirmed that the Treasury did indeed release sensitive information regarding RBS to the media in advance of any formal announcement. “That is an extraordinary development which merits an urgent and thorough investigation, given that it appears to be a clear and serious breach of both financial market rules and pre-referendum guidelines. We need to know which minister or official authorised the release of this information, the timing of that release and to which outlets. “This is further evidence of the lengths to which the Westminster establishment are going to in an effort to spread scare stories about business activity in Scotland following a Yes vote next week. “That includes the reports that the Prime Minister met with supermarket bosses in Downing Street yesterday to try and persuade them to comment on their price structure in Scotland – again, an extraordinary revelation given the strict controls on retailers’ pricing. “Westminster’s scare tactics are being exposed one by one – the people of Scotland are seeing straight through them, and will not be cowed or bullied, as they continue to move towards a Yes vote in huge numbers.”

Hacker:...Anyway, the Americans will always protect us from the Russians, won't they? Sir Humphrey: Russians? Who's talking about the Russians? Hacker: Well, the independent deterrent. Sir Humphrey: It's to protect us against the French! Hacker: The French?! But that's astounding! Sir Humphrey: Why? Hacker: Well they're our allies, our partners. Sir Humphrey: Well, they are now, but they've been our enemies for the most of the past 900 years. If they've got the bomb, we must have the bomb! brant grebner
https://archive.today/MscUL BBC response to complaints BBC News at Six and Ten, BBC One, 11 September, 2014 ComplaintWe received complaints from viewers who felt Nick Robinson's report on the Scottish First Minister's press conference implied that Alex Salmond had not answered a question put to him.Response from BBC News The BBC's Political Editor Nick Robinson asked Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond two questions at his press conference on Thursday 11th September. The first question centred on the tax implications of RBS moving its legal headquarters to London; the second on why voters should trust a politician rather than businessmen.Nick Robinson's report showed the second question on trust, with a script line noting that Mr Salmond had not answered that point.Mr Salmond's answer on tax was lengthy. Since it was not possible to use it in full in a short news report, a series of clips were included making his central points - the job implications of the re-location of RBS, the accusation that the Treasury broke rules by briefing market sensitive information and his request that the BBC should co-operate with an enquiry. In addition Nick Robinson's script pointed out that the First Minister said there would be no loss of tax revenue. The BBC considers that the questions were valid and the overall report balanced and impartial, in line with our editorial guidelines. exile
The BBC considers that the questions were valid and the overall report balanced and impartial, in line with our editorial guidelines. Pathetic. "why voters should trust a politician rather than businessmen." Why should voters trust a broadcasting corporation rather than a politician? When we can see what happened at the press conference, and see how the BBC edited it.

exile
"The BBC considers that the questions were valid and the overall report balanced and impartial, in line with our editorial guidelines." We need the wider context though. Back bench ex PM comes to Scotland, makes a speech, it's a big event, Brown's actual message (about a timetable) is reported, and the bigger narrative is 'Broon saves the Union' The three amigos come to Scotland, make speeches, these are big events, their actual messages (about reminding us that this is a referendum not a general election) are reported, and the bigger narrative is 'UK party leaders show their commitment to Scotland' The first minister makes a speech, where the state broadcaster heckles in front of international press corps, and the story is 'Slippery Salmond didn't answer my question'
