Bristolhibby
Never mind that a chunk of the people won't even get a mortgage in a million years, the fact that it removes good housing stock (that isn't getting replaced) from the system. It also means landlords end up snapping up more stock to "rent" back to the government at extortionate rates. More transfer of public money to private (tory voting) hands. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/apr/14/right-to-buy-children-tories-pledge?CMP=share_btn_tw An excellent article from the ever brilliant Owen Jones. thplinth
http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2015/04/14/right-to-buy-is-wrong-in-every-way-imaginable/ The morning’s headlines will be dominated by the Tories plan to extend the ‘right-to-buy’ scheme to housing association tenants. Reports suggests that up to 1.3 million people will get this right at discounts of between £77,000 and £102,000 if they get their way. I want to out this in context. That is a planned giveaway of assets that do not belong to the government of at least £100 billion, or more than last year’s whole deficit. It is a 100bn bribe to buy the votes of 1.3m living in council houses who probably would never have voted tory. 100bn in assets that you as a taxpayer paid for and own. Used to buy votes for Eton Dave. Think of it as yet another union dividend. As for the folk living the in council houses, for 100k what do you think they will do? It'll be the same as it was under Thatcher, wave a few quid at folk and they are tripping over themselves to get a piece of the action. They sold off most of the country at huge discounts to greedy punters eager for more without thinking of the long term consequences and this is just more of the same. johnnie x
Right to buy from private landlords with a nice hefty discount. Oh no, that would off the greedy cretins who feel the need to own a fleet of houses.

I understand the need for a private housing market for renters but some folk just take the piss and it stops the young from being able to afford their first home. EddardStark
Must admit I benefited from the right to buy scheme in terms of discounted purchase price. Bought it for approx £23k around 22 years ago. To counter this I still live in the house and have no intention of moving. Lamia
Right to Buy was theft from the public purse and now a huge amount of people are paying the price. If I hated Thatcher for anything it was this.

Hertsscot
My parents bought their place; as did many in the street Had an amazing effect on whole of the scheme ; with the introduction of RGU campus the area has a better outlook than it did before I don't think anyone is necessarily arguing that buying council houses is wrong per se. My parents did (tho' not at a massive discount Dave seems to be offering). And it can be true that ownership of their own property often leads to people taking better care of it but this is completely the wrong time for this policy, a small minority of people will be able to get onto the housing ladder but it doesn't deal with the real issue of homes being increasingly unaffordable for many people. As the Telegraph says, "Financially speaking, the scheme is nonsensical. Practically speaking, it is close to absurd. If the Tories - and Labour - really want to help less well-off families realise their dream to own their own home, there are far less expensive ways of helping far more people."
