Jim Murphy @jimmurphymp 38m38 minutes ago

On way to Glasgow Caledonian Uni to set out Scottish Labour's opposition to tuition fees in Scotland.

Here's what Ken Livingstone stood up in Parliament and said about him in 1996

That this House condemns the intolerant and dictatorial behaviour of the President of the National Union of Students, Mr Jim Murphy, who has unconstitutionally suspended NUS Vice President, Clive Lewis, because he took part, in a personal capacity, in an open debate at Queen Mary and Westfield College on the issues raised by the Campaign for Free Education; further notes that along with President Elect, Douglas Trainer, both men have warned NUS Executive member, Rose Woods, that if she attends the Scottish launch of the Campaign for Free Education she too will be suspended from the NUS Executive; reminds Mr Murphy and Mr Trainer that freedom of speech is a right in the United Kingdom, that they have no power to overturn the results of elections that went against their preferred candidates and that, whilst these methods are a common practice in dictatorships around the world, they are not acceptable behaviour from someone such as Mr Murphy who is putting himself forward as suitable for election to the House of Commons.

From The Political Ceilidh:-

"

If you are confused reading this story about Jim Murphy promising that there will be no tuition fees in Scotland you are perfectly entitled to be.

In the first place, Murphy is campaigning in a Westminster election. Education is not reserved. Westminster has no powers over education in Scotland. As a Westminster MP, Murphy could do precisely nothing about honouring this vacuous promise.

And it is certainly a vacuous promise. Because there are already no tuition fees in Scotland. And we can be as certain as anybody ever can be in politics that no SNP administration will ever reintroduce them. Can we have as much confidence in Murphy's latest "vow"? Not if his previous behaviour is any guide.

Murphy voted to impose tuition fees. He derided the idea of free tuition in terms even more scornful that his predecessor's infamous "something for nothing" speech. If he has had a change of heart, that's fine. But surely somebody should be quizzing him about it. Why are the media glossing over Murphy's murky past an focusing entirely on the tawdry baubles he is dangling before the people of Scotland?

The reality is that this announcement is nothing more than a ruse to keep Murphy in the media spotlight. What he has said is utterly meaningless. But the British media present it as if it is some massively significant policy statement and a real game-changer in the election campaign.

There is something distinctly dishonest about that."

I wonder how much his education at Strathclyde University would cost (9 years with no degree at the end of that time) if he had managed to get fees in place?

I don't understand why no journalist asks him "Would it be OK to get free education for 9 years, even if the student didn't graduate at the end of it."

Andy Nicoll in the Sun yesterday said something along the lines of "Jim Murphy is not a stupid man, he spent longer at university than I did at school"

Was there not another similar stooshie about abolishing the student grant?

Murphy (as president of the NUS) voted in favour of abolishing the student grant even though the NUS had voted against abolishing it at their conference. It was a long time ago, so might be a bit muddled?

Why doesn't any of the MSM ask him:

* why he's campaigning on a devolved issue, education, in a Westminster election?

* why campaign for free education in Scotland, which is already free?!

* as an MP, will he campaign for free secondary education in the whole of the UK?

* why has he changed his mind on the issue recently, and will it be UK Labour policy? Does he have permission for this?

* does he support totally free education, or is he proposing 'back door' fees like Ian Gray and JoJo supported?

The man is a lunatic - why isn't he getting challenged by the press?

I live in the world were crowd funding was born, genuine funds are lost in a vast ocean of thieves and chancers :)

Edit: Before anyone jumps on my head for SNP/Salmond bashing, this ones on me, I'm extremely cautious on crowd funding, albeit with good cause.

George had been putting in a power of work and will be known by many in the constituency where it matters.
