ErsatzThistle
Enjoyed the On the Buses films on ITV3 earlier. They aren't even particularly funny - just liked the characters. It's a very brave man in this day and age that admits to raising a smile at On The Buses but to be honest it still has it's moments. What a sad state "British" television is in nowadays. The afternoon kids films and the old classics from the 1940's and 50's are the only watchable content. At least Nanny McPhee this afternoon had the lovely Kelly MacDonald in it If anyone wants something to watch over the festive period that's relatively new, original, hilarious, completely mad, delightfully surreal and criminally underrated then might I suggest the brilliant NBC sitcom "Community". Plenty of places to watch it online.
Toepoke
Must've watched about 30 seconds of TV all Xmas day. That's what having young kids does for you I suppose. Don't seem to have missed much....

G-Man
Just watched Marvellous and it was. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04jmx7l/marvellous Can't wait for Mapp and Lucia as I love E F Benson. Also love The Vicar of Dibley but been out all day so if it was on I've missed it but no fears as French and Saunders on radio 2 tomorrow. Now cooried up on couch with wee Baileys as my driving duties are over and about to watch Arsenic and Old Lace, bliss.

Gaz
a serious point underneath your complaint . I remember hearing Elaine C Smith saying that scottish folk need to see themselves reflected back in their own media more, When you are bombarded with a viewpoint through a different lens it definitely effects a nations sense of self worth... Thanks Gaz...the point I was struggling to make. Since the beginning of time, British TV has specialised in these safe, middle-class, middle England type of programmes......without us realising it, these types of programmes have been used to define 'Britishness'. It's only now that I really notice it. I'm sure Phart could put the psychology of this into words better than I could.
Hertsscot
I quite like University Challenge, got asked to go on it once but stupidly turned down the opportunity and regretted it ever since. I'd agree with the general point though the media consciously or otherwise seems to enforce this Great British mind set at every opportunity when it's just really representing middle class England. Armchair Bob
Yep. Majority rules. There's some decent programmes that come out of NI and Wales but we never get to see them because they are 'regional', have you ever heard of a comedy show called Give My Head Peace for example? Funnier than half the Miranda / Victoria Wood / David Mitchell type crap we usually get.

Exactly - such as the BBC with their continual The Great British <insert real programme title here> pish for months in the lead up to the referendum... Ended up watching it again at 5am this morning. Lying there swearing I'd never moan about the wee things again, then my Hoover broke and I acted like Ebola had struck, pathetic. He really is an amazing man as is Lou Macari.

Rossy
so many angry people on this thread. I have watched 60 minutes of TV in two days. Nobody on this thread is angry in the slightest. I notice that you always try to paint people who question the establishment view, as 'angry'. You need to open your mind a little bit more. TartanTeddy
I watched Downton Abbey for the first time last night - the cost of Christmas Dinner at the parents. Two things struck me, the first that it reinforced the class stereotypes and painted a very warm picture of privilege which plays to the Tory/UKIP picture of England. The second that it had incredibly high production values - which I haven't seen in too many BBC programmes and have never seen in any BBC Scotland production. I could also understand why it's popular as it (appears from watching one episode in the middle of the second series) to be very well written and has a cast of some excellent character actors. Not really my cup of team TT

For the first time ever, people are questioning this default position. I realise though that for many, questioning the establishment is a step too far.. Lamia
so many angry people on this thread. I have watched 60 minutes of TV in two days. I have watched none as we have cancelled our TV licence because of the very issue being discussed. I am not allowed to watch any TV because if I don't want to pay the BBC I am denied access to anything else. Now that makes me angry. But to be honest I haven't missed it one bit - 3 months and counting.............
