I'm all right Jack, etc. I recall a tube strike in mid 90s about this time of year ; used overland train then had to walk about an hour ( in new M&S moccasin style shoes that were a bit too tight)Not a pleasant day Think was Liverpool St to office by Victoria
Charlie Endell
They don't even 'drive' - they just check that it is clear to open / shut the doors and make announcements if there are any delays. £46k a year for that - which admittedly won't go very far in London, but hundreds of thousands must get by on much less. Charlie Endell
Apologies, I was wrong, it's actually just a few hundred off 50 grand. Poor downtrodden workers.
kumnio
The tube drivers should are at it, a computer system could do the job better. They get paid for doing next to nothing, its a ridiculous wage that they earn.

Charlie Endell
Yes, yes, it's apparently about 'unsociable hours', but I bet that could be smoothed over with wonga (which is clearly what they're after). "It can be repetitive having to check platforms before leaving stations, but it's a vital and important role." "It can be repetitive having to check platforms before leaving stations, but it's a vital and important role." I don't believe that's the case. There's also potential job losses for station staff and safety concerns with the new rosters. Change in working conditions without consultation and no discussion so fair play to them. Let's see how it plays out before just assuming it's all about money

Genuine concerns about sleep patterns from extended night shifts, etc.More power to them. One of the few groups of working class workers who genuinely wield some power in the job place. The rest of us have had the shit kicked out of us so bad we don't dare complain. Instead of bad mouthing a group of workers, we should be asking why isn't everyone on a decent wage with decent terms and conditions? "Divide and conquer" alive and kicking. Bristolhibby
Have a read of this article guys. http://m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/7751262?utm_hp_ref=uk I quote - "So if the dispute isn't over pay, then what is it about? In the simplest terms, it's about rostering. As the proposals currently stand, tube workers are being opened up to the possibility of working unlimited night shifts, running roughshod over their entitlement to a life outside work. It's akin an office manager telling their 9-to-5 staff that they are to work from 2 o'clock in the afternoon to 10 at night without asking if that's alright. None of the unions involved are opposed to the Night Tube per se - introducing it would bring London Underground up to speed with the more complex New York Subway to an extent, but limits need to be placed on the number of night and weekend shifts individual members of staff will be expected to work. This is vitally important for passenger safety, as well as the health of those working the night shift." J
