Debian
Taking the good wife away for just over a week, and have booked up for the 3 cities in the title. Any recommendations outwith the usual 'touristy' stuff anybody can suggest?
DoonTheSlope
If she likes football then the San Siro tour is a good way to pass a couple of hours. It only cost 12euros a couple of years back. I'd imagine the Barcelona one would be even better!!
scottincarlisle
I would avoid Milan....its a dump as is the San Siro.
deecie
I've heard mixed reviews about the San Siro.

Rich NATA
The San Siro is a cathedral to football; an awesome sight. The best IMO. What it needs though is new seats, new catering kiosks and new toilets. That's wh some negative comments come from.
Flora MaDonald
I honestly don't know why Milan gets a bad name on here. It's alright zooming in for a couple of days and bearing your erse at the Duomo, but if you actually spend a bit of time there, it's a cracking city with great folk. arbroath55
Barcelona - If you like wandering round food markets ( I do ...) then a visit to La Boqueria is a must and pop in here for a plate of seafood http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d7813347-Reviews-El_Xiringuito_de_la_Boqueria-Barcelona_Catalonia.html For good tapas and a great atmosphere go here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d2151085-Reviews-La_Pepita-Barcelona_Catalonia.html Milan - for a day trip take the train up to Como, only takes 36 minutes, and take a boat trip on Lake Como

It doesn't have that much to offer the visitor compared to other cities. Would you recommend going to Milan before Florence or Rome? I wouldn't. Out of the three cities the OP is visiting Milan is definitely third in terms of priority. It's not bad. It's just not great.

I've never been before so will probably do the touristy bus tour too. Anyone see any glaring omissions in my list or things they'd recommend? Any other pubs/restaurants you'd recommend? aaid
The area around Porta Genova by the canal is pretty good for bars and restuarants although sadly Cesare Maldini's place is no more.

Montjuic Castle gives you a great view of the city and from there you can walk to the Olympic Park then onto the Miro Museum and the Catalonia art museum. The Born area is quite cool, the beaches at the end of Avenue Diagonal are much better than the ones in the city centre and Pull and Bear do no bad gear that's cheaper than it is over here. It's been a while since we were last there but we stumbled upon a big open air square just off Las Ramblas that had loads of really nice places to sit outside and have a beer or bite to eat in the sunshine. You kind of went through an arch in a building and it was then almost like it was a big open air atrium behind all the buildings. There was also a cracking underground nightclub there (back when i used to go to nightclubs) that we had a great night in! ETA - Placa Reial it's called. deecie
I went to the restaurant on top of the cable car at the beach end. Was decent like. The big half built church is surprisingly shitty.
wanderer
Milan - sh*t hole...... really do not see how it can mutter its name in the same breath as major cities like New York, London and Paris. Barcelona - slightly better sh*t hole...... city I really want to force myself to like, but for some reason just can not bring myself to like (the Spanish Civil War tour is amazing though).... try not walk around with a backpack, as I had to go back to our hotel after 5 minutes of walking down Las Ramblas to dump mine in the room, as it felt like there was a million eyes watching me ready to mug me have to say, its a totally different place at night, with lots of great wee bars and restaurants. Budapest - City that took me a long time to appreciate.... didn't like it my first visit in any way, yet since then visited a couple more times and really grew to like it boat cruise on the Danube is a must don't bother heading into the Buda side of the city to late in the day as all the action is in the Pest side. It's her birthday, so it'd be good to go somewhere relatively nice at least one night... That was the one area that I we struggled with this year I just wasn't that keen on the food (though I am quite picky) however there are some nice, reasonably priced restaurants in a wee complex down at the habour at Barcelonetta subway station beside the history museum. If you don't want to go native Dunne's on Via Laietana next to Jaume 1 metro station is at the top end of the Irish pub experience.

The big half built church is actually now entering it's final stage of construction. It's due to be completed around 2032....

It's a sh*hole that has one of the great cathedrals in the world, one the greatest opera houses in world, one greatest shopping areas, a fantastic castle, great cheap train access to lakes and mountains and once you are of the centre neighbourhoods where there is still real sense of community. By the time they are finished they'll have to start renovating the original parts as these are clearly starting to crumble now, it'll be a perpetual building site.
