He was being mentored by G Brown and carried a pile of Labour political books everywhere. He was a hollow party line man then and as you say he has become the worst type of career politician since. Going on the exit poll if you transfer all SNP seats to Labour they would still have less seats than the Tories. So it is complete nonsense that no one has mentioned.
