Orraloon
By miles. Foot had integrity, which these lying bastards couldn't even spell. Excellent post. It would have been perfect if you had spelt intergrity wrong though.

Stapes
Yon's the second time you've slandered the memory of Michael Foot by comparing him with modern Labour figures. He was an immeasurably greater man than the current fools. This.
tartandon
Tartandon - if people really do fall for the contempt and unsubstantiated lies that are uttered by that snake oil salesman that is Murphy then I really do fear for their wellbeing as well as their mental state. That's my point. If they keep getting kicked in the nuts and lied to, yet keep coming back for more then we need to realise that certain groups of people will continue to vote a certain way irrespective of what happens. It is when these people wake up and truly realise what is going on that we will have a real opportunity to impart change.A change in the voting patterns of these groups of people will signal the tipping point. If the SNP do win the number of seats forecast by some of the optimistic polls than that would be the tipping point and we must seize the opportunity this would present. King Of Paisley
I guess I was comparing Foot to Murphy in the media lampooning stakes. I was about 9 when Foot was swimming against the tide against Thatcher, but from what I remember he was a bit of a lunatic. That said, I doubt Foot would have been ordering his activists to phone old grannies into scaring them about their pensions being taken out of the UK system. I think your childhood memory is letting you down. Michael Foot was one of the good guys. Which was why the media constantly ripped the pish out of him. One of the last socialists that the Labour party had.
King Of Paisley
Think Foot was firmly against nuclear weapons, Orraloon. So would definitely have found a kindred spirit within the SNP

Flora MaDonald
i liked his duffle coat , I was relatively young, but still remember the almighty hoo-ha about that - "Disgrace to our war dead, etc, etc". FFS, the man was there paying his respects and should've been able to wear what he wanted. Aw but no, because he didn't have plumes and feathers coming oot his arse he was ridiculed. aaid
Think Foot was firmly against nuclear weapons, Orraloon. So would definitely have found a kindred spirit within the SNP I saw Michael Foot speak as leader of the Labour Party at a number of CND rallies in the early 1980s. He was a confirmed unilateralist, I'm not so sure that was something that you could say about the leadership of the SNP at that time. However, both the Labour Party and the SNP are very different organisations nowadays.
Orraloon
The fact that the duffel coat is what most folk remember about him, just emphasises what a good hatchet job the media did on him.

exile
Scotland on Sunday reckons SNP will be an 'irrelevance' (Willy Rennie's word!) as their (Curtice's) poll of polls has the Lib Dems surge from 1 to 3 seats while the SNP would only manage to go up 2 to 45 You'd almost think they'd loove to see a Labour-LibDem-SDLP anyone-but-SNP coalition Edited April 12, 2015 by exile
Orraloon
You'd almost think they'd loove to see a Labour-LibDem-SDLP anyone-but-SNP coalition I quite like the idea of that option.
exile
I quite like the idea of that option. The day after the last election a lot would have too! I think my remark was due to the way it was written - with Curtice saying if the big parties do enough "the Nats' acquiescence is no longer required. The crucial question is can either of them get to the 300 mark?" and then casting around to find any possible party or MP - including SDLP and 'left-leaning Lady Hermon' in North Down - hence 'anyone but SNP'. exile
I wonder, if the Tory-Lib Dem coalition got back in, but Tories and Lib Dems were wiped out in Scotland. Would the Scotsman see that as fine for the Scottish national interest?

King Of Paisley
Given how toxic the Lib Dems are for getting into bed with the Tories, I'll be surprised that they will have enough MP's to form any coalition at all.
