neil r
...dead at 90. The curse of 2016 strikes again. Another one taken before his time. 90 is no age. Tragedy. Thoughts with any of the Castro family who read the TAMB.

EddardStark
Probably one of the great figures of the 20th Century whatever view you take on his politics and actions. Certainly deserves his place in history.
frazzle
A hero alongside Marti Bolivar and Chavez to name a few. One of the greatest political figures of the 20th century, Cuba today is an example to latin america that the US does not need to be appeased

scoobydoo
It'll be interesting to see what'll happen to Cuba now that Fidel is gone. He's been out the limelight for a bit but its the effective end of the Castro era. Fortunately he's died before the Donald is inaugurated else it might have been first on the list of Trump takeovers. Clinton would have been at Obama to bring Democracy to Cuba, american style, immediately.
Ally Bongo
I've noticed that it's as if what happened under Batista has been missed out in most commentator's obituries on the mainstream media. Castro wasnt a hero but he was far less of a murderous tyrant than Batista Thats my take
scoobydoo
Castro was a hero in the eyes of many. And rightly so. he stood up to the states and curried favour when he had to. Only the churlish would deny it.

What about homosexuals, prostitutes, those of a religious persuasion or of a different political persuasion ? 1253 Cubans were murdered by extrajudicial killing over and above the military/batista regime prisoners he executed by firing squad The 30,000 put into forced labour camps would probably disagree too .......... thplinth
Yep. Let's not forget that Cuba houses the Guantanamo Bay Torture facility. Just goes to show how evil Castro was. Edited November 27, 2016 by thplinth
Eisegerwind
1253, that's a very exact number, who was counting? 14 minutes ago, Ally Bongo said: What about homosexuals, prostitutes, those of a religious persuasion or of a different political persuasion ? 1253 Cubans were murdered by extrajudicial killing over and above the military/batista regime prisoners he executed by firing squad The 30,000 put into forced labour camps would probably disagree too .......... There might be another thread on whether he was evil or not. Id probably vote No on that 21 minutes ago, Eisegerwind said: 1253, that's a very exact number, who was counting? Eisegerwind
1253, so that's an official figure from Cuban government records then, OK. The fact that it was an exact number had me thinking it might have been a made up number quoted on an anti Castro website.
thplinth
600 attempts to kill Castro. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/fidel-castro-survived-600-assassination-attempts-article-1.2888111 Anyone who thinks Hugo Chavez died of 'natural causes' is tripping out their mind.
