The premise that justifies their actions are not factually equal though. I.e. the election wasn't stolen, Q-anon isn't real. While there is systemic racism inbuilt in areas of America. kumnio
Racist violence to beat racist violence is never going to work though. And sadly there were people willing to ignore it, and even worse, back it up. America is fucked up beyond most people’s worst thoughts, people thinking it’s the start of healing now, simply by getting a Democrat in power, are going to be massively disappointed. Not advocating racist violence though, got to be careful as well. My friend lives in Portland , in fact I was on holiday with her last February, the way the media were portraying it as a warzone was crazy, it was barely 3 blocks in a part downtown. You didn't even know it was happening in 95% of the city.Outrage news/politics sells and makes folk money, now all the sides that stoked that and used that tactic for their grift have to deal with the consequences of picking low hanging fruit. Seeing this all go down has gotten the attention of the adults in the country and moves will be made to sort it out. Just can't let the partisans set the narrative now. We'll see what happens. He told me i was talking shite and to wise up. I had downloaded a text file from a BBS (bulletin board system) that explained the conspiracy theory in detail. This was the early 90s, before the internet was really a thing.

aaid
Interesting to see the banks pulling the plug on Trump and in particular Deutsche Bank. DB's exposure to the Trump organisation is apparently in the region of $2.5 billion and they've been propping him up for years. I guess now he's out of office, any potential upside to them is massively outweighed by the reputational risk of having him as a customer. SpecialisedOutsourcing
Where have all the TAMB Trump supporters gone? Crawled back underneath their rocks? And equating "Antifa/BLM" protestors with the Nazi scum on the right is laughable. One side is fighting for justice and human rights, the other is fighting against it. phart
Here's what I was talking about with regards to how terrifying AI can be. A now-classic thought experiment illustrating this problem was posed by the Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom in 2003. Bostrom imagined a superintelligent robot, programmed with the seemingly innocuous goal of manufacturing paper clips. The robot eventually turns the whole world into a giant paper clip factory. Such a scenario can be dismissed as academic, a worry that might arise in some far-off future. But misaligned AI has become an issue far sooner than expected. The most alarming example is one that affects billions of people. YouTube, aiming to maximize viewing time, deploys AI-based content recommendation algorithms. Two years ago, computer scientists and users began noticing that YouTube’s algorithm seemed to achieve its goal by recommending increasingly extreme and conspiratorial content. One researcher reported that after she viewed footage of Donald Trump campaign rallies, YouTube next offered her videos featuring “white supremacist rants, Holocaust denials and other disturbing content.” The algorithm’s upping-the-ante approach went beyond politics, she said: “Videos about vegetarianism led to videos about veganism. Videos about jogging led to videos about running ultramarathons.” As a result, research suggests, YouTube’s algorithm has been helping to polarize and radicalize people and spread misinformation, just to keep us watching https://getpocket.com/explore/item/artificial-intelligence-will-do-what-we-ask-that-s-a-problem?utm_source=pocket-newtab-global-en-GB

I suspect that this isn't some grand plan to radicalise people rather a focus on the development of algorithms to suggest content rather than identifying and blocking of truly dangerous content. On the surface these prediction algorithms that sites like YouTube and Amazon use should be largely benign - putting to one side arguments about targeted advertising which are wider than just the Internet - as essentially they're designed to cut through the billions of crap on here and show me things I'm really interested in. Problem is that savvy people have twigged this to promote ideologies that are dangerous with no filters as both the tech companies and governments - via regulation - are unwilling or unable to keep up with it. As an aside, I find whenever I look at YouTube the videos it recommends for me are generally things I'd be interested in. However, for Facebook, I'm constantly thinking "How the fuck do they think I'm remotely interested in that".
ThistleWhistle
Always remember the algorithms (aka- search history) on here when I started 10+ years ago directing me to Mature Dating. Now it's currently banners for an online lighting supplier and tablets for erectile disfunction so the TAMB's maybe need an update because I ordered two table lamps just last week. phart
Nah i'm going to post teh Q-anon folks cognitive dissonance that Trump didn;t drain the swamp etc. Remember they did that long term study of that eschatological cult, and how when the end didn't come instead of changing their mind they just doubled down. "When prophecy fails" it's called.

kumnio
The only reason that I know what that is, is because I googled it years ago, after you mentioned it on here 😂 Its similar to why you can’t rely on social media for anything, for example half of say ‘Ruth Davidson’ trending on Twitter is her getting slaughtered for being useless, and the other half is her getting lauded. The Q Anon stuff is mental, although I must admit I’ve spent less than 5 minutes looking at it, before losing the will to live, and giving up. It’s either someone taking the piss, or someone making good money out of it, or probably both. Trump going won’t suddenly make things better, these people will live on. More likely half the tweets are people slaughtering her for her embarrassing performance at FMQs and the other half are people asking why she's trending.
