Douglas Fraser - Business And Economy Editor, Scot (Bbc)

Recommended Posts

Anyone else think that Douglas Fraser (BBC Economy editor for Scotland) is a total of a man ?

Before, during, and now after the referendum he seems to take pleasure in using his journalistic position of authority to talk down Scotlands economy. The general anti SNP / Scottish Government jibe in his articles is barely hidden between the selected facts used to illustrate his politically biased articles.

His latest article really made my blood boil.
Blaming the Scottish Government for the failure of Pelamis wave energy ?
Ironic - surely the Government should be commended for backing such risky ventures and technological innovations ?
For without public funding they wont happen at all...
Clearly there will always be some failures amongst government backed business start ups - especially those involving new technology.
However why choose to highlight this one ?

Even at the end of his article he has a wee gloat about the low oil price.

This man is the epitome of all that is wrong with Scotland.
Too small, too poor and too stupid - just let the big boys at Westminster do it properly....
Sadly, as ever, with the BBC you cant leave comments on their Scottish editorial articles either.

He is only allowed to spin this stuff as his superiors let him.

To think of another small european country like denmark, Austria etc having their tv folk taking down their economy would not be put up with.

That we, in general, speaks more than any 45/55.

Unfortunately bbc Glasgow and the scottish labour party are like cousins. Both need conquering.

Did broadcasting make the Smith comm?

I think for many of us any lingering belief in BBC impartiality has we'll and truly gone over the last year.

Arguably with the media a false cloak of impartiality is worse than simple bias or advocacy ?

Though a national broadcaster could never take such a stance officially.

Even 3 months after the referendum the BBC is still coming out with the "too small / wee / stupid" nonsense.

The fact you cant comment on them makes it even worse...

Perhaps if the potential of wave energy hadn't been pushed so much in referendum campaign the failures wouldn't be picked on.

So, along with oil, hydro power, wind power, whisky.......is there anything else we should just have shut up about?

Here is the funny thing.

Thanks to investment from Scottish Government the worlds biggest tidal power station is currently being built in the Pentland firth.

"Construction on one of the world's largest tidal power projects will begin in the Pentland Firth later this year, Energy Minister Fergus Ewing has announced.

Once completed, the 269-turbine development could power almost 175,000 homes and support more than 100 jobs in the north of Scotland.

The £20.5 million investment was made possible by the Scottish Government's Renewable Energy Investment Fund (REIF) and funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE)."

Scotland is also forecast to be carbon neutral by 2020.

.... and another firm continues to work in Scotland on wave power (so maybe its not dead?)

All of this requires some kind of government funding to get the ball rolling and develop the technology and industry.

Of course Douglas Fraser neglects to highlight any of this!

Instead he deliberately used the failure of one small university spin off company to attack the Scottish government.

Given that wave power was at the very speculative end of what resources we could rely on I'd suggest it could have been left out.

I disagree. We're world leaders in many things. Talking up. Ambition. Striving.

Not limitation, inertia, passivity, acceptance of what is.

I disagree some of the stuff being pushed during the campaign such as wave energy (and the lack of success and list of challenges were well known) moved beyond striving and ambition and into fantasy (or if you were being less generous disingenuousness).

Suppose it's a difference in horizons.

My view on life is the planet is ####ed. Humanity will run out of fossil fuels, that is guaranteed.

Unless we want our great great great great great grandchildren off fighting in a desert or the artic killing other kids to get what little hydro carbons remain, we must invest in renewable energy.

Wave energy will be harnessed, there will be vast solar farms in the Sahara, the land will be festooned with wind turbines. Unfortunately the guys in charge are too busy getting filthy rich on the planets natural resources.

Sorry you are wrong mate, science is the future. There is too much fossil fuel in the world to force the issue but we will harness energy through fusion and fission. I promise we will look at windmills and solar panels and laugh. Renewables is an obsession. Neutral energy, why. We won't travel the universe in windmills.
