Over 30's

I'd say if we don't win the Slovenia game at home (to well and truly end any hope of qualifying) then that would be the final straw for our over 30s (other than our goalies).  Kind of futile keeping the likes of Russell Martin in who won't improve and has regressed in the last couple of years.

If Scot Gemmill is adamant he'll only play players eligible for the next under 21 campaign then it's surely time to start playing a few of the last crop in the first team (thinking of John McGinn and Ryan Fraser in particular).

bollox - plenty of international teams have players 30+

Yes they do. Guys who have won world cups , championships, euros, play in the champions league... Not bench players in English 2nd tier.

It's not about age, but if you're good enough,  and much of Scotland players are just not good enough.

Difference being ours are almost exclusively guff/past it

that's fine then - the reason they should not be picked is cos they are not good enough - not cos they are above 30

so we agree

Over 30's thing being old went out in the 80's - plenty of players are now playing through until 35-37 cos of better diet, and managing their body better.

lets just play the u-21 side in senior internationals to prepare for the future

oh, wait...their total shite

It worked for Iceland though. They kept a few decent players (Gudjohnsen, Sigurdsson etc.), got rid of the dead wood and promoted the 21's. They knew they would be garbage for a few years until the young lads matured but look at them now....

Difference is though Iceland (and it was the same with Wales) had a generation of quality youngsters coming through to blood so it was a sensible strategy, we don't. The only young players ever likely  to make an impact at senior level are Tierney, Robertson , Paterson and Burke, all of whom Strachan has put in the starting line up this campaign so you can't knock him for that. You might as well persevere with Fletcher, Brown (if he can be arssed) and Berra for the rest of this campaign whilst we have some faint hope of qualifying rather than throwing in the towel.

Come the start of the next campaign I don't see our squad being any different, hopefully Morrison will have called it quits and Greer will be player manager of East stirling maybe and been replaced by Phillips and Souttar  but otherwise we're stuck with what we've got really.

I would rather persevere with the young lads coming through and give them the chance to improve. Players like Fletcher, Berra, Greer etc. aint going to get any better and therefore neither will the team.

If we promote the youth and give them a chance to strive maybe we will improve. This campaign is all but over. It was the same players who let us down last campaign so why should we persevere and pay our money to watch them again and again. I think a lot of fans would be happy to see us promote the youth and have a go at it.

If it doesnt work then lets face it we were highly unlikely to get out of the group anyway but in return we have a young, healthy team with 5-10 caps each ready get stuck into the euro 2020 campaign with the dangling carrot of 2 of our 3 group matches being played at Hampden if we qualify

Would build the current team around Paterson, Hanley  (hes only 24 and most centre halfs don't reach there peak until later 20's, folk need to get off his back, but he needs regular games at club level every week to improve), Tierney, Robertson, Kingsley, Souter, Griffiths, Bannan, Burke, Forrest, McGinn every player 25 or under

Keep McArthur, Morrison, Snoddy & Marshall or McGregor for experience.

For me that should retire from national team, Darren Fletcher, Stevie Fletcher, Scott Brown, Mulgrew, Martin, Greer, Berra, Maloney, Gordon all 30 and should make way for younger players or not as good as they were.
