Well if you you rule out good teams and then middling teams that's what your left with.

And if we'd beaten Germany (like Ireland and Poland did) we would have qualified or got into a play off at least.

I'm actually disagreeing with the other guys who said it's pointless playing these games i.e. Italy & France.

If we avoid playing them we'll never improve.

Nonsense. If you were AFC Wimbledon, would you improve by playing Chelsea every week?

What have we learned from this week? Anything we didn't already learn from beaten by Germany twice and England twice?

We're playing England twice in qualifiers (we already know they're distinctly better than us AND we know how they play).

so why aren't we playing teams like Slovakia, Slovenia, and Lithuania?

The French already saw us as a joke of a nation. I already get it in the neck every year for the 6 nations. The no vote was hilarious for them. Now the football team too with this embarassing level of football. And to top it off they're playing in that comedy pink strip.

The French are right, we suck as a nation and suck at football.

You learn by playing teams of a similar level.. Not by chasing shadows and trying to keep possession across your back 4 all day long.

So Fringo you think this game tonight will improve us??

In time yes. But we have years of pain to go through and have to accept a rebuilding process over 5-10 years minimum (along with many structural changes across the country). Otherwise we'll be having similar conversations across the country in 10-20 years.

Snooker, darts, curling, shinty, come on we'd have a chance at all of them!

We'd still find a way to screw it up. Now if we were to take anyone on at self loathing we'd be gold medal winners every time

We've been saying this since 1986?

At least!

Seriously though, why are we able to develop decent young Scottish rugby players when barely anyone plays the sport in Scotland, whereas Darren Fletcher is the only quality footballer to have emerged  in the last 20 years?

To defend picking matches against big teams, a flukey win can get loads of ranking points, and it makes joining the SSC more popular, but Berti showed though that getting hammered by these teams just destroys the confidence, you'd think there were beatable teams above us in the rankings that we could have picked.

Cos theres only a dozen ex colonies that play rugby so be the 5th worst makes you the 6th best

Aye, but we're still competitive against countries that have up to 50x more players like England and France, and against powerhouses like Australia.

Correct yet in football, we are miles behind the likes of Iceland and Northern Ireland.

on a side note it's not just out lack of talent, it's also our players lack of interest in the national team

Kingsley may have been at Crewe on loan but he finished the season looking impressive at Swansea so that's a bit misleading

That's all you need to so to get a Scotland cap these days ??

Is there not an element of the better teams are bigger and stronger, so as long as we can produce big strong boys we can compete to an extent?  we only have 1 or 2 players that have the skill to pick up the ball and do something creative. Football's non contact and skill based compared with rugby.

Barely heard of him, but he did okay. Just about our only player willing to take on a man before passing it

The French tv pundits are taking a lot of positives out of that match. It was the perfect preparation match for the euros. Lots of confidence etc. I think they've seriously underestimated how sh#te we are.

We'd beat some of the teams in their group.
