giblet
Having a conversation in the workplace, when did people start having to pay for going to the Dentist? It seems we have tolerated a big chunk of the NHS going private over the last 20 years without much protest. Could be a blueprint for other specialised services the NHS provide. With new Dentists opening practices to fees only, existing ones offering subsidised services must be getting thin on the ground.

scotlad
Check-ups are free in Scotland at present, are they not? I know treatment isn't - for some strange reason I always need a scale and polish whenever I go for my check-up.
Toepoke
IIRC it was in the mid to late 80s. At the height of Maggie's sell the family silver drive...

And in Aberdeen anyway, there is certainly no shortage of NHS dentists. Seems to be more NHS dentists taking on patients than there are hairdressing salons now. About 2/3 years ago, I had the following over the course of the year: 5 fillings, 2 surgical extractions, two extended scale and polishes, 1 normal scale and polish. Came to about £120 I think. andreimack
I've been private since 1999 when I got back from NYC, at the time my local dentist was not accepting new clients and I had toothache so spunked for private, the service is excellent and you don't wait weeks for appointments. Don't have to wait weeks up here either, albeit back in 1999 when you mention, the situation here would have been similar.

With new Dentists opening practices to fees only, existing ones offering subsidised services must be getting thin on the ground. I often wonder the same. Same can be said for prescriptions down here. I managed to get into a NHS dentist in Calne, I had a nightmare a couple of years ago with infection. Went in ended up having root canal treatment and a number of follow up consultations and refillings as it kept getting infected. Net result, because it was all the same problem/treatment that hadn't been resolved total cost £50. Now IMO that is brilliant value for money and would shudder to think how much that would have cost private. But why should I get that for £50 when somebody else (who through no fault of their own) cannot get a NHS dentist? There is no means or needs based assessment. That said, me and my family are now in an NHS dentist and as long as we don't move I intend for it to stay that way. J

I got one of them the other week when an old amalgam filling crumbled away - they really are the business. Can't help noticing how so many of the soap actors (and especially the young female ones) get their teeth done at great expense despite their role in the soap involving them portraying a minimum wage machinist or corner shop assistant. Exglasgowasc
Went for a free 6 month check up 3 weeks ago and was told i needed a scale and polish for which i went back last week. Cost me £10.87. Since then i have been back twice this week and have to go back on Monday after a sudden infection flared up in my gum and i woke up with an even more inflated face than i already have on Tuesday morning. Might have to be referred to hospital for further treatment. Nae idea how much these last two visits will have cost me. Positive from this is i have lost two pounds in weight since i couldn't eat on Tuesday or Wednesday!!!

David Bowie's never been the same since he got his teeth fixed. My dentist gets his teeth whitened regularly. Looks ridiculous, like an American game show host or something... Exglasgowasc
Ha ha not drinking either. I'm on really powerful antibiotics and under orders of strictly no alcohol. I'm actually leaving work early to attend a funeral. Sonny Lindsay if you know the name. A Brigton boy and Scotland regular in the nineties and 2000's.
