I just need someone to talk to to give me techniques to help me stop thinking about the things that were dragging me down all I got was medication and someone who wasn't interested in listening to me.

I had to figure it out for myself.

That's poor. There's still a postcode lottery to good mental health care and treatment.

Lamia, I'm truly sorry that SSRIs had a negative impact for you, but they do work for many people; I have one friend who credits them with saving his life. That said...it's truly shocking that you weren't offered any counselling or therapy. New studies have shown that CBT can be as effective as SSRIs in treating virtually all but the most serious forms of depression. Problem is, the NHS waiting list is 6 months minimum, which is why some GPs don't even consider it. In a twisted sense, I was actually 'fortunate' that I had alcohol and substance abuse problems as well, so I was given access to counselling and CBT very quickly. This, in conjunction with the drugs, has certainly helped me.

A change of username and avatar might also help to cheer you up a bit? :wink2:

I tried that, but for some uknown reason, the mods would not allow me to use, "i'm a big dirty hun bas*ard, and don't you forget it", as a user name, and the picture of me smacking feck out of skull Murphy and Geoge Galloway, with a big shi*ty stick, was knocked back as my avatar.

Inconsiderate bawbags. That would have cheered everybody up.

I was referred by my GP but not for what I would call counselling. I got 10/15 min appointment with a "specialist" basically to discuss my prescription. She was not remotely interested in any detailed discussion. My GP on the opther hand was great at listening but didn't have the expertise to offer what I needed.

I just don't know what medication could possibly do to help - the only medication that would have helped me is something which stopped my thinking at all. Obviously some people find it of benefit I just don't get it really

Away and take yer pills :-)) :-))

Glad the attitude is a lot different on here than a few years ago.

The OP has sent me a PM before and i sent them one back detailing everything they could do. They never responded but i hope it helped. I'd just re-iterate that you mustn't hope it will just go away. If there is a chemical imbalance, like a diabetic taking insulin, you have to adjust the body with medicine to a healthier level.

The first step is talking to a medical professional preferably your GP in the first instance.

Honest question could the chemical imbalance be (partly) a consequence instead of a cause of depression (or a mixture of both)?

Sometimes deeply depressed, suicidal people have a an experience that 'snaps them out of it' overnight.

If you accept that this can happen it would suggest something else more akin to a 'software problem' than a hardware problem if you know what I mean.

And I very much do accept that there are many with chemical imbalances out there but I think for some % is more software than hardware.

I have with depression and anxiety for years now and in recently it takes a hold foe no particular reason.I have been on medinaction on and off for last 12 years.I have had counselling and cbt.all have been successful with varying degrees at different times.exercise and healthy lifestyle choices are the best solution.antidepressant medication is all to readily handed out by gps.no one really gives you any insight as to how to get off it.it is rampant among society and particularly in men of 30-50 years old.

The drug companies have corrupted the GPs. (Not all but many.) They incentivise them to prescribe a drug for every ailment. No talking, no understanding, just prescribe and get on to the next one. This makes the drug companies endless money and they reward the GPs for it.

Going to your Doctor has always been a risk but now it is downright hazardous to your health.

The main reason most of you are overweight or ill is down to being told to eat the wrong foods this last 30 years. Has that bad advice also had a mental health impact? Well you'd have to assume so looking at the body health impact...

I don't post much but this subject relates to me a lot and it is amazing how attitudes to this are changing especially towards men, I to have had bouts for the last decade since I was 24.

I have tried many tablets and tbh none have really worked for me but everyone is different. CBT has helped and I am just finishing with my latest

course.

I find the best thing is to keep active/exercise and good support from family and friends although it is difficult to do when you just want to be alone but people will help and stand by you.

I really must say my faith in humanity has been restored by this thread. Like another poster suggested, a few years ago a thread like this would have been full of folk saying things like "pull yourself together" "man up".

To the OP, I hope you're seeing the support and are taking on a few of the suggestions.

The hardest thing about depression was telling my friends, family and GP. The easiest thing was them accepting and helping. Get the help :ok:

Killie and Scotland. Toxic combination.

Good for those who are genuinely ill and seeking help. The biggest frustration for me in my job is the folk who fake it. Koonts.

There have been a number of threads like this and I would say that in the main they have all been like this one. I think it is good that people can see that they are most certainly not alone.
