Apparently he has been the US National team goalkeeper coach for the last decade and comes with a great reputation. Sure I read that Stevie Woods was only doing it on a game-by-game agreement but not wanting gig on a full time basis.
scotlad
A couple of very good appointments, particularly Austin MacPhee, whose scouting and detailed analysis of opponents was apparently a major factor behind Northern Ireland reaching the last Euros. tjm007
Assistants is one thing - but Clarke has got an extended contract. Not sure that is warranted.

Agree, did I miss some thing or has he only won one of our last nine competitive games and that was against the Faroes? Not counting the Faroes game we've scored five goals in eight games He should have go the remainder of this campaign and any new contract should have been based on qualification for the play offs or at least a competitive third place. I really don't understand the people in charge.

Totally agree. Instead of picking anyone closeby who's going some time to spare (it's happened before), he's gone with experienced international coaches that bring something substantial to the table. The other thing that I'm delighted to hear Clarke emphasise on the MacPhee appointment is that in bringing in the dead ball coaching specialist at Aston Villa he's keen to improve an area that has been sorely lacking for the Scotland team lately. Our corners and free kicks were pathetic in the Euros. Against the better teams we need to be dangerous from the set piece. That's what Iceland and Northern Ireland's success was built on. Of those 9 games 3 of them have been in the Euro Finals, and 2 of them were playoff games that got us there. There's improvement to be had, but if you had told me that Clarke would get us to the Euro 2020 Finals when he arrived, I would have bitten your hand off for it regardless of the amount of times we don't beat Israel beforehand. Clarkes failure to win the nations league group and therefore an almost guaranteed play off spot is what irritates me most.

Aye, set pieces are levellers; one of the few aspects of the game that affords both sides the opportunity to be equal. Unfortunately, we are quite poor at them, both in terms of taking them and defending them.

By looking at his last x amount of games is the exact opposite of cherry picking results. Cherry picking is picking individual things that backup your argument. Giving Clarke this deal is absolutely ridiculous, the results and performances have been utterly awful for a long time. If the next month or two go badly, then the SFA have just royally fucked up again. At this stage of the World Cup qualifiers, and based on his entire tenure, this extension is simply not warranted. This is very accurate. We actually have terrible managers in charge of our Under 19s, 21s & full squad just now, it’s quite impressive how the SFA do the wrong thing better than nearly anyone. csinclair
Tbh I don't think there's anyone better than Clarke who'd be interested/we could afford for the top job but it amazes me Gemmill & Stark are still in jobs
