I think the template for automatic qualification would have been as follows....budget for nothing against Germany, 4pts from Eire, 4pts from Poland, 6 pts from Gibraltar, 6 pts from Georgia.

In amongst that we could have afforded one slip and still been in with a shout but typically we had two. The defeat in Tbilisi and the loss of the late goal against Poland. That said I thought we were lucky in Warsaw, they absolutely battered us after Milik came on.

spot on here PIAK, as soon as you start playing for anything but a win, you set yourself up for a fall.

I'd look upon anything from the games against Germany as a bonus, from that point of view we were slightly unfortunate that Germany dropped points early in the campaign and in the 2nd last game having qualified. We played them when they needed to win.

In an ideal world for us, Germany would win every game apart from maybe dropping points against us.

Ireland and Poland showed that we shouldn't be budgeting for zero points against anyone

Yet we got none. We're the ones who haven't qualified for two decades principally because we've failed in games we should have been expected to win

Did you miss NI qualifying with Josh Magennis up front?

Very true and by same token Albania have qualified, then you get Holland that didn't....so what??? We got undone by one piss poor performance in Georgia which frankly fu@@ed our campaign on the spot....that said our record over last 20 years is dreadful but we are not producing players that are good enough....

Nope. Can't agree. Our draw in Dublin was very poor from Strachan also. He set out at the start of that game for the draw. Unacceptable mindset and that mindset is what holds us back as a team.

Bottom line is:

Meaningful International football is actually quite rare for the majority of young adult Scotland fans. I say meaningful because I’m not including friendlies – as they are no better than a kick about.

We only have about 5 games a year so there isn’t that much to get excited about compared with club football (games non stop from Aug-May.)

To me the whole tournament IS the qualifying campaign. It’s just qualifying campaign after qualifying campaign, no end product! There hasn’t been since 1998.

No wonder the nation just accepts that we just a team that takes part in the group but never make the final. That’s what we’re used to.

If we had won in Georgia we would have been playing Poland at hampden with winner finishing 2nd.....possible different mindset if that was the case??? Even drawing that as we did we would have play off.....It was quite clearly Georgia fooked it all up.....all other results and largely performances were up to par....we blew in tbilisi.....simples

Pish. If we had won in Ireland we would have went through to the play-off on a head to head with the Irish. That's even taking into account our loss against Georgia.
