My inlaws (aussies) couldnt believe it either.

Then again, Aussies bottled their vote to become a republic (which had no risk at all) so they cant really criticise anyone.

The Aussies are nae daft though. By being independent but also retaining the monarchy they get to have an independence day holiday AND a public holiday whenever a royal gets spliced/snuffs it.

Truly, the best of both worlds. :whistling:

Just checked and in 1999 Australia's population was around 11 million. More than double that now. Maybe a Q for another thread but is there another developing country in the world who's population has stagnated like Scotland's?

Strewth mate! That's a huge increase over a short space of time.

Good question re Scotland's population.

I posted this on another thread: http://statsireland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/post01.html?spref=fb

It shows that RoI's population increased by 60% in 50 years whereas ours increased by less than 3%. More importantly, their working age population is proportionately higher.

How has the referendum result made you feel?

More or less willing to go back?

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/sep/19/devastated-or-pleased-scottish-expats-react-to-vote-against-independence

Melbourne crew got in the Australian guardian. I'm the first quote.

Decent article although nobody cheered when a no vote was announced, not sure how that was confused because we made our feelings well known.

Can't see me moving back anytime, soon, at some point in the future definately, nothing to do with the Referendum though, only because i have a pretty decent job and lifestyle here in Germany!

Oh, so it was things people said on an internet messageboard? That trumped the sash bash and the "Vow" being shown to be a lie already?

I was keeping Scotland on my list of 'next moves' but after that result, no chance. I really thought society there had turned a corner. It's not the empty headed bigots that I hate about Scotland. I grew up amongst those and I'm used to it. They don't realise that they're ridiculously misguided in their beliefs. In a way they're even victims. Election fodder for the labour party. No, the part of Scottish society I don't like is the comfortable middle classes. The rugger buggers. The private schoolers. That part of society is educated and savvy enough to know exactly what they were voting for. Even to see through the lies. But they still voted no to avoid rocking their comfortable little boats and knowingly shafted the poor. I don't want to be surrounded by people like that.

of course if the boot was on the other foot with the jute and weedgie pond life ; they'd be quite happy to dig into their tracky bottom pockets to bail out the rest in this socialist utopia

Back in Tirana after ten days at home doing my constitutional duty and leaving suitably gutted at the outcome.

Gutted even more to hear every one of my colleagues today (Albanian and European) saying why did you guys not go for it?

I'm working for an international organisation that promotes European Integration and has sanctioned Albania's candidate status as a potential EU Member State, but whose President, Jose Manuel Barroso, came away with this:

"I welcome the decision of the Scottish people to maintain the unity of the United Kingdom. This outcome is good for the united, open and stronger Europe that the European Commission stands for."

Presumably because the European Commission didn't have to cope with the outcomes of a result that it didn't fancy, a la the Lisbon Treaty referenda in Denmark, Holland and Ireland a few years ago.

What is clear is that the tide has turned. Although we lost this particular battle, Scotland will be a fully independent nation in due course, and it will be within my lifetime.

Thanks for your opinion. I'd be amazed if anyone who's met me would describe me in such a way, so i'll not worry what someone on the internet thinks :ok:

I don't think the referendum outcome would affect my decision either way. The three Fs are the reasons I might come back - family, friends n football. They are unaffected by the referendum.

So far as the article goes, I didn't go to the arisaig tearooms to watch the result cos it was billed as a yes event by the attendees on Facebook, so I'm not sure if the interviewees are representative. Most Scots I know here wanted a no vote.
