sonofoi
The Venue Edinburgh was great, Liquid Rooms is good, Picture House was great, now to become a souless Wotherspoons. Loads of good venues in Glasgow. Was at The Art School few weeks ago great sound. We played in the liquid rooms last weekend supporting SLF! Great sound and gig, but no kettle backstage!! scottincarlisle
For me, my favourite venue was The Forum in Livingston. In November 1989 I saw The Cult followed by Aerosmith the night after. Brilliant llive bands, brilliant venue. I was at The Cult also. Sure they played 2 nights.
TDYER63
Apollo was fantastic when full , like a previous poster I also seen The Jam there and thought the place was going to collapse. However I got dragged to see Camel by an ex boyfriend , was the worst gig i have ever been at , so it wasnt always a brilliant venue . Probably didn't help that they were.a completely shit group and the place was half empty. The relationship ended. He was a nice guy but had buck teeth that dug into ma lips when we kissed so between that and the musical differences it was never gonna work. Heuch Moray
Agree with the Apollo being the best venue although older folks often consider it was far superior when known as the Green's Playhouse. Not on the same grand scale of venues but GSA's drinking den the Vic was personally a special place on a Thursday night. It didn't have a great sound system but memory tells me The Clash, Jesus and Mary Chain and Belle & Sebastian coped well enough.
Toepoke
Was the Apollo much different when it was Green's, or was it down to the legendary bands that played there, Beatles, Hendrix, Zeppelin etc? I once read some structural engineers were asked to analyse the infamous oscillation of the circle and found it only moved about an inch. The effect of hundreds of bodies bouncing on it made it seem to move much more. Totally safe apparently Edited November 21, 2015 by Toepoke

Kirk
Barras. Nowhere else gets close. Yep, best place about without a doubt. For those saying you can't get a drink, there's usually tables at the back next to the main door selling cans of beer.

Toepoke
It was a bit big for a porno cinema. Not half, Europe's largest cinema full stop at one point. I think the Classic Grand was the porno cinema...

Totally safe apparently Can't imagine it was any different when it changed its name and the big named bands still continued to perform at the Apollo. Led Zeppelin I think returned but Hendrix didn't. I might be wrong but I think The Beatles only played the Odeon in Glasgow with Dundee being another one. Might be a mention in the book 'Apollo Memories.' At every gig I always had a 'seat' in the stalls as near to the stage and oblivious to the balcony looking in danger of collapse although the sound of the audience was thunderous. Dillinger
On a more serious note, the Barras wins hands down with King Tut's my preference for smaller gigs. Saw Glasvegas in there a year or two ago at a charity gig, magic. Supported themselves dressed as Sgt Peppers
Toepoke
SECC hall 4. The acoustics are to die for. The last few gigs I saw there didn't have too bad a sound, they finally managed to improve it just as the Hydro was opening. It was better than many arenas if you were sitting at the back as you weren't actually that far from the stage. The side-on views were terrible though... deecie
Was at the "Barras" this weekend past, and yeah. Not bad. My only problem was the gig finished and I had to go home.

They were doing a world tour for Tattoo you and they announced a couple of "secret" warmup gigs of which the Apollo was one. From memory the only announcement was on Radio Clyde and that tickets were on sale now. In those days you had to go to the box office, I think they sold out basically through word of mouth in two hours. The tickets had some other bogus name on them to stop word leaking out at the printers. Never got one myself, had to hitch down to Leeds to see them at Roundhay Park. Well worth it though. I've got a book about the Apollo somewhere and it mentions those Stones shows. I think England were up here for a game at Hampden, there was a photo of Mick backstage with some of the players...
