exile
So the Independent in an editorial Ïn defence of liberal democracy... says there would be 'justifiable fury' if the SNP has sway in Westminster... declares nationalism 'guilty until proven innocent'.... and backs....the ConDem coalition! http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/editorials/in-defence-of-liberal-democracy-10224221.html
Toepoke
So no longer independent then? Nice to see plenty of comments slating the editorial. The editor guy whenever I've seen him on tv has been pretty condescending towards Scotland and the SNP in particular...

The editor guy whenever I've seen him on tv has been pretty condescending towards Scotland and the SNP in particular... Ah yes the comments! Never seen so many hostile comments directed at the newspaper itself. Looks like they could lose a fair proportion of readership (but how many who make comments buy the paper, and vice versa?) scoobydoo
It calls Nick Clegg principled so the whole editorial can be filed under 'pish'.

Cove_Sheep
I thought the Independent always claimed to be exactly that? I'm assuming that has now changed?
mariokempes56
The paper has been, while very English based, very fair on uk and world affairs. If its swinging away then that's very disappointing and surprising.
EddardStark
The Independent backed LD in the 2010 campaign, disappointing to see them go for LD/Tory ticket. Would prefer them to back LD alone or none at all. Edit Looks like the Independent actually stayed neutral, whist their Sunday edition went for LD. An uber right-wing press which drives the political agenda (certainly south of the border). The Indie's editorial today is a slap in the face for the thousands who buy it to get away from the jaundiced, biased, neo-Liberal trash and lies that you get in the DM or The Telegraph. Awful. The comments after it sum it up.
Mox
I can't say I am surprised. Lebdev is also the owner of The Evening Standard and that has always been sympathetic to the tories.

exile
We are now facing possible constitutional chaos. According to Radio 4, it's about whether the govt should be formed by the party that can command a majority, or the largest party. But John Humphreys just implied this was a matter of 'parliamentary arithmetic' versus 'democratic legitimacy' (or words to that effect). Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought by convention there already was an answer - 'the party that can command a majority'. So who's to decide what is democratic legitimacy? The court of public opinion, as reflected in the newspapers...? The Independent backed LD in the 2010 campaign, disappointing to see them go for LD/Tory ticket. mariokempes56
I bought it today and will do so for another week or so as its quite amusing to see their pseudo-intellectual outrage (ie not the rabid Mail shite).
irnbruman
I occasionally bought it e.g for train journeys - but don't see me buying it any more. I do but the Daily Mail on a Saturday though - good sports coverage and I like the telly magazine - always worth a laugh for the shyte in the rest of it.
