I know someone who's staying in Mannheim with a local family they know. I can ask for recommendations if you want? (And, aye, I know this is a very late response....) Grim Jim
Much appreciated. I've only had a quick look on Trip Ad, and my impression is that it's not touristy... which has its upside 😀 We're in the city centre a couple of nights pre-Stuttgart, so a nice quarter to hang about in the afternoon, then watch a game in the evening would suit. That and simple German food... or pizza 😄 For the record, I have many fleeting memories from Germany over the years. I've briefly been to Düsseldorf (Alt bier, wurst & something out a window a bit like Jägermeister. Hiding in the rear of an Irish pub watching Kazakhstan hump us), Köln (Train strike, kolch & brot und käse), Dortmund (Pizza & football), Berlin (Airport Augustiner & pretzel breakfast. Cool wee bars in the east), Rottenburg ob der Tauber (Friendly hotel, fairytale town, doughballs & gravy), Munich (Work/training, Englischer Garten, hairy armpit girls, large beers & 101 ways to cook liver), Fürstenfeldbruck (Work/training, nice folks), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Sunshine & Zugspitze. Best hotel room ever), Lindau (Bodensee & lightning. Seehunde vs lederhosen [long story]), Friedrichshafen (Sunshine, wee Zeppelin & big spiders), Freiburg (Cold fishburger lunch stop), Upper Rhine (Europapark), Heidelberg (Castle) & Berchtesgaden (Tourist bus stop from Kitzbuhel to Salzburg). Sorry, I got carried away. Love Germany 😆
SteveMcD
For those staying in or around Heidelberg, a good pub to go to is 'the Mohr'. Nice place, sports orientated, football memorabilia on the walls etc. Located just off the main square. The owner is a good guy, have attended many Hannover 96 games with him. Beer and a pizza will easily be available, but for an actually nice place, our local contact is recommending getting the train to Speyer or Heidelberg - both of which are less than an hour from Mannheim, and both have nice, cosy old towns to wander (drink) in. hoggeddie
Hi Did not manage to get any tickets for EURO 2024 for Scotland games or any other. Not a Tartan Army member so cannot buy any if available and refuse to pay touts. This will be my first missed World/Euros in the continent since 2006 so you will have to do without me. I had booked accomadition in Dusseldorf Youth Hostel for bed and breakfast for several nights and now will free up bed for someone else. Atthough part of the youth hostel association it welcomes people of all ages including me who turns 77 during the tournament. Have used them for over 30 years and no problem. Heads up then for anyone looking for a bed but I will have to let them know this evening that i am not taking up their offer. Hope this might help someone from Scotland.
