They claim a lot more but it seems to include anyone who has ever bought a pint in a Labour club. Do they not also sometimes count trade union members (even I they don't vote Labour) as being members of their party or something like that ? Labour claimed 20k in 2010, but 7k of those were members of labour social clubs whose subs went partly to the party but who had no voting rights. The wave of democratic engagement resulting from the referendum is continuing, the SNP has said today, as 16,694 new members took the party’s total membership to 42,336 as of 4pm - closing in on the UK-wide membership of the Lib Dems, which is 43,451.
