Auchinyell Sox Change
Lived in Germany for 25 years , built my own house , but never really felt at home there and the Germans are a pain in the arrse when it comes to qualifications ! Lifestyle is good , money is good, health system is way better than ours. Despite all that I always wanted to return here eventually. Which I did 2 years ago. With hindsight I would probably go to Australia or Canada as many of my military friends did . I would recommend living and working abroad at least for a time. It gives you a completely different outlook on life. Ex army Army of the Rhine then ?Load of ex army guys in Belize ; married local Was there few years back Decent lifestyle ; nice place Edited September 6, 2015 by Auchinyell Sox Change

jock strap
These ridiculous Monday or a Thursday fixtures are a proper pain in the arse for those living outside Scotland ! ( and for those living in Scotland before people moan ! )
McExpat
Made the move from Scotland to Spain coming up on 3 years ago. Wish I had made the move sooner, when I first considered doing so. I've not been back since. I do miss Scotland from time to time but not yet enough to make a trip back. Trips to Germany & Holland gave me a taste of Scottish like weather and made me realise what I wasn't missing! The main difference here is the better weather and the resulting better outdoor life. I often find it noticeable how the weather can affect both your mood and that of those around you, to such an extent my preference would now always be to have a permanent residence in a location with very nice weather. I am currently considering another move just to experience living elsewhere but will likely return here after a period away. I will continue to own a property in Scotland so will never say never to a return but for now a life abroad is the life for me.

Made a tidy Rand profit but it's negated by the fact the Rand is virtually worthless at this moment. No point in moving the money out of SA just now. Gonna open a savings account with the FNB and get paid 6.35% interest while we wait for the Rand to recover a bit....
Chico
I moved to Luxembourg for a year, to see what it was like, come November I'll have been here 10 years. My advice would be to give it a go. If you want to try somewhere that isn't Anglophonic, but are worried about the language barrier, maybe try somewhere with a big financial district. Somewhere like Frankfurt, for example, as loads of the locals will speak English, anyway, and will help you out while you're learning the local lingo (I'd expect them too, anyway). In saying that, I'm still not fluent in French, my German is good enough to shout when at the football and my Luxembourgish is basic as basic can be. I know swearies in a fair few languages from playing football, mind you.

macy37
What an interesting thread. I have been looking for about 1 year for openings in my line of work without success as I really want to try abroad especially now I have a wee one. Life is too short so let's give it a bash. I'll keep looking meantime.

I then got married and moved to a wee place called Cheadle Hulme but since then i have been divorced and I am now in a wee village called Gatley (on the way to Manchester Airport) and love the place, I do get homesick but Glasgow is only 3 and and half hours up the road in the car and I am engaged to an amazing lass!! Tartan Monkey
Moved to Qatar 5 1/2 years ago, hated it. Left after 2 years. Now very happy in Abu Dhabi in the UAE, been here 3 1/2 years. Very settled and don't see us moving, wife happy, wee one at school. Lots of friends here, most friends from home have moved overseas. Hardly any friends left in Scotland now.
