jeezo man give it a rest.

no matter how hard you push your paranoia, its still a BRITISH team competing, that ain't going to change.

who cares about some t-shirts, we can see plenty of saltires and scotland shirts too.

its a good event and quite high profile for glasgow, certainly in tennis terms. good to see the emirates getting used to. the more the merrier i say.

You consider yourself a 'Brit'. We get it.

For many of us, it's a manufactured concept. This event is simply one of these concepts.

Were you?

Yes.

Were you ?

And you don't think it's excuse to push the idea of 'Britishness' ?

There are a group sitting next to each other that are shown on TV after every shot, all wearing 'Back the Brits' T-shirts. No-one else has these t-shirts.....looks to me like they're a group planted in, to be front and centre on TV, to start the 'when the Brits go marching in ' songs.

Paranoia man!

The Back the Brits stuff was the LTA's motto for previous Davis Cup ties. They probably got the gear then...

I think your user name gives away what you are.

Your opinion.

I think you're over-using the word 'paranoia', given the last 2 years where the concept of 'Britishness' was forced upon us by the state broadcaster....and other organisations....at every opportunity.

Can anyone honestly think of any reason why the host country is not competing as the host country and is part of a coalition. Are the English so bad at sport that they need to join with other countries to give them a chance.

Are the Scots so genetically inferior that they need to hang onto the coat-tails of a much larger country.?It would appear not as we seem,to have the star player.Does any other country who hosts a tournament not put out their own team ?

Woodforde and Woodbridge...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Woodies

Not forgetting McNamara / McNamee.

I can only think it's a totally different version of the same game, like Sevens v Rugby Union, not all players are good at both...

Woodford was a pretty good singles player. Won a few titles and made it to the top 20.

Most of the top singles players could be top doubles players too but the schedule these days makes it virtually impossible to do both. Can't think of anyone since McEnroe that's combined the two successfully on a regular basis.

It was tennis. The vast majority of people couldn't care less that it was happening in the first place. That a few people were wearing 'Billy Brit' t-shirts at it (I'm going by what I've read on here) is beyond irrelevant.

Aye Paranoia may be a bit strong but I struggle to understand why folk are getting het up about people sporting the colours at a Team GB event.

Probably for the same reason that we've our own football team despite being part of the UK, it's just the way it's always been. And until Andy Murray came on the scene it didn't really matter anyway.

I would have liked to take the kids to see Andy Murray play but I don't support GB at any other sports and I don't want to support them at tennis either.

Would love to see Scotland entered one day, then I'd be interested.

Anybody go to it ?

I tried to get tickets for it but it was sold out

Going tomorrow, and looking forward to it.

I'll be supporting GB and wanting Ward to win just as much as I want to see Murray win. Until we vote otherwise I'll have no problem supporting British teams, whether that's tennis, rugby or the curling. I'd obviously prefer to see Scotland compete as an independent nation but in this circumstance that isn't currently an option, so GB it is for the moment.

Have to say some of the faux outrage over British teams, whether it's Davis Cup or the Lions on here is pretty tedious. Always strikes me as the response of people who don't have any confidence in Scotland as a country.

What if it's not faux? I've no interest in supporting the UK at sport. It's not a "country" I identify with.

Then it wouldn't be relevant to my post, however the majority of the outrage on here is most certainly faux.

As for you, support who you want. Don't support who you don't want. Life is really that simple :ok:

What about the individuals, would you support them? Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, James Ward, and the other one, Inglot

I like to see the Murrays do well. The others don't put me up nor down. I'm definitely not waving a butcher's apron for them.

No one forces you to wave a flag at these things you know. You're free to support people how you choose.

Generally this attitude, however deeply felt and genuine, makes people look narrow and petty (or at least it's very easy to portray as that). It's damaging to the broader nationalist cause to appear like this, so even where its absolutely genuine, and I have no reason to think it's not, you should be careful about how and where you express it.

Why are some of the doubles specialists unable to translate their ability to be top ranked singles players like the Bryan brothers, Jamie Murray etc?

It's more a problem for the men. At the majors it's 5 set matches, so fitting in doubles is (or potentially can be) pretty difficult and demanding. Whereas for the women, the most they will play is the minimum the men play. So easier for them to also play doubles.

It's also a reason why them having the same prize money isn't fair, but that's another story!!

I know nobody's forcing me, that's why I don't get on board with the Davis Cup. I'm not a crusader on the subject, but it's not for me.

It's an embarrassing BritNat w@nkfest. Mainly full of the following - people coming up from England who are proud to be British. Fair enough, don't have an issue with that at all. And Scots who consider themselves Brits and see this is as a chance to also assert they're real Scots too. Deluded t0ssers. I'm out.

I guess Irish Republicans living in the Republic probably have less problems supporting the Lions than fellow Republicans living in Northern Ireland. I'm not too bothered by supporting GB at tennis but current event does feel a bit 'colonised'.
