I take it you're being sarky? If not, it's over-reactions like that that encourage right-on tree-huggers to get their knickers in a twist over trivial shite.

How many white footballers were there at the ACoN?

Yes I'm being a sarky,I'm a racist too!!!!

I black up all the time mate.

How many white players were at the Acon hahaha!

 Tit.

The obvious lack of white players at the ACoN is precisely my point. It would be kind of pointless having a fancy-dress night based on it without blacking up wouldn't it. I honestly don't see it as racist.

Yer a tree hugger because you think backward white middle arseholes blacking up is a wee bit racist hahaha!

Who or what are these tree huggers btw ?

How come it's always white folk who don't ever really come into contact with the black community that find these things wrong ?

I tell you this board is racist and bigoted and its mostly white middle class protestants that use it.I suppose its a "Tartan Army" board so it shouldn't surprise me.

Why is blacking up racist though, i genuinely don't understand how

it's like saying that guff comedy film white chicks was racist, it wasn't

It was just rubbish!

The importance of context and power cannot though be underestimated when discussing racism. The white man has for centuries oppressed the black man. (We should not allow ourselves to indulge in whataboutery). A bunch of white middle class students then dressing up as black men in an almost totally black country is inviting criticism.

The idea of fancy dress is that it is supposed to be funny. What were they thinking, who was going to laugh at them?

It all started with "the minstrel shows in the US where white actors where blacked up to play black people - who were portrayed as stupid, lazy and a whole range of other racist and negative stereotypes"

that became the association with blackface, the same white hoods became associated with KKK or swasitka with anti-semitism.

Of course context is key in everything, so i can see why folk would wonder as they wont be making these associations in their head so are bemused at the reactions.

I think you will find that it started long before that. There are records of blacking up going back to medievil times in Kent, it was common in Elizabethan and Jacobean theater so it was definitely started before the minstrel show

Yeah using "it all started" wasn't not a good idea :ok:
