Wauchope Lad
Not sure if this has been posted before, but this is great wee film about how wolf`s have a impact on the environment for the good. http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYv_csqWJTSfQK3vOZDJKQw
phart
Yeah was pretty cool, i'd say over that it shows how the ecosystem developed into a mutually dependent process and how small changes scale up to huge changes.
brant grebner
Cool video - cheers. In the years that wolves were absent from Yellowstone, coyotes started filling their niche with a degree of pack hunting. The Yellowstone coyotes were proper canis latrans coyotes though and couldnae take down the bigger deer, hence the over-population and the consequent environmental damage. When the wolves came in, they wiped out most of the coyotes. Funny that most of the wolves in the video have dog ancestry with their melanism. Wauchope Lad
Glad you enjoyed it guys, food for thought eh, do you think we should reintroduce them in Scotland?, it`s my opinion that they should as they were part of our natural habitat, and we should return the land to how it was before man mucked it up. Some good reading here http://www.wolvesandhumans.org/wolves/wolf_reintroduction_to_scotland.htm
phart
I'm away to read this pdf http://www.wolvesandhumans.org/pdf-documents/wolf_scotland_reintroduction.pdf then i'll be in a better position to answer , never really thought about it before. The closest is in 2nd year at uni my German flatmate and his pal hired a car and went up north, and they were out walking and saw a "BEAR Highways van" and were desperately trying to remember if Scotland had bears and the quickest way back to the car. Grim Jim
I've long thought that Scotland's flora & fauna would be best improved by re-introducing a few wolves. Would they go for the sheep rather than the deer though? Didn't see any Yellowstone sheep. Either way diversity would improve.
Wauchope Lad
Got to agree with you jim sheep would be the biggest problem, but the wolf is native to Scotland. Edited November 1, 2014 by Wauchope Lad

OLAS
Just get rid of the deer
Orraloon
Just get rid of the deer I agree, we should have a major cull of deer (obviously properly managed) and donate the meat to food banks. I think we should seriously look at reintroducing wolves as well though.
euan2020
I read an article a few weeksback that said the wolves in yellowstone were over played and it was not down to the wolves - will look later for it http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/10/opinion/is-the-wolf-a-real-american-hero.html?_r=0# Edited November 2, 2014 by euan2020
