Anybody who had been paying attention over the decades would have heard Alex Salmond saying very similar things. They have both always been on the gradualist side of the party.

Correct. Swinney is a gradualist, but that doesn't make him a traitor, or MI5 plant or whatever

Do you have an opinion to support your link?

It's not that long ago i said on here that McAlpine was a loonball vering on being unstable with his vitriol against the SNP

However the SNP have done nothing to show that he has always been wrong - in fact they have done the opposite

Same with Wings

I'm torn

I also said that the criteria for being SNP leader is someone that you could see taking Scotland to Independence

Just can't see it with JS and i'm tired of the can being kicked down the road

I get your frustration, i really do.

But that's the hard reality of where we are now - retreat mode, trying to keep the Yes movement alive. That means staying united. I'm happy Swinney and Forbes have agreed to work together.

Any chance (anyone) of a one sentence summary of 'how Humza was stitched up'?

(I had a click, it's 47 minutes and the entire first minute is an Alex Salmond intro...)

Almost the whole show is an interview with McAlpine - after the intro

It was leaked to The Times late Sunday night that Humza was resigning and Swinney would be the new leader

Humza was still trying to save himself at 7.30am on Monday

The interview is very good

Thanks. So how was he stitched up? Sounds as if he was pushed?

Aye - i think the terminology is wrong

In short - on the Friday Humza was still "in control" and then he sent letters to all the parties including Alba

On the Monday he was no longer in control as the SNP had "leaked" the story to The Times that he was resigning and Swinney was going to be the new leader

McAlpine would be amazed if the leaker was anyone from Humza's team therefore it was the SNP Machine - presumably Sturgeon, Swinney et al

Stabbed in the back rather than a stitch up - unless someone whispered to him that he should dump the Greens and he was to be the sacrifice

I noticed that one or two people have commented on Swinney's age, as if he's some sort of dinosaur but he's actually younger than Starmer - and nothing ever gets said about Starmer's age. Both are obviously spring chickens compared to a couple of well known American politicians.

He's been around for aeons though.

A hirsute John Swinney in the mid 80s with the soon to die mysteriously Willie McRae...

Its a good interview Exile. I dont particularly like the folk in the videos that Ally usually posts , Barrhead Boy guy in particular I just cant take to, but this video was good despite being a bit depressing.

I think he looks older than he is unfortunately, which probably doesn’t help. Cant believe how young he looks in the pic Toepoke posted.

Thanks. That makes (more) sense.

It implies the SNP machine is still working, not broken chaotically, albeit working towards its own ends?

Even so, if you believe independence is best served by a strong electoral performance by the SNP in the next election(s), then presumably the 'coup' (or whatever it is) could be seen as a good thing.

If you think independence is best served by the SNP being first destroyed then replaced, then presumably not such a good thing.

I guess my view is that I find it harder to believe option 2 would work as readily as its supporters seem to think. I can see the attraction of being a bit more bold or bolshie and not 'begging for a section 30' and so on, but I don't see what the actual plan would be to gain independence in the face of an intransigent British state...

The only half-credible option seems to be using an election majority as a de facto referendum, but it's hard to see how that would work by destroying the main pro indy party. It would seem the SNP should be the party to attempt it, but if so it needs to be in fine electoral fettle. And even then it would need the British state to agree to abide by the result.

Spot on.

Alba seem to want the SNP to agree to a single 'pro-Yes' candidate for elections. It means the SNP standing down in certain constituencies to give Alba a free run. I've never heard of a big political party making way for a challenger before. Strikes me as magical thinking.

Alba's place is on the list vote in Holyrood elections. I'd vote for them there. Otherwise no.

I guess there's a case for letting existing Alba MPs have a free run e.g. Hanvey, McAskill and also MacNeill but otherwise it's cloud cuckoo land from Alba. They simply don't have enough credibility at present. Regan's actions voting with Tories and Labour in the VONC hardly helps their cause.

Their VONC vote was a mistake. Surprised Salmond made it. Really surprised they did that.

Maybe Ash hit the wrong button? 😁

Seriously though, it's unlikely Alba would get a list vote from me anyway, but stuff like that gives justification to not choosing them.

😆😆

On the actual vote, do you not think it was their only option after being rebuffed? Is it possible they knew the Greens were not going to support the motion and Albas vote wouldn’t make any difference anyway.

She should have abstained.

Doesn't look good for a pro-independence MSP to be voting to bring down a pro-independence Government. You do have to question the thinking behind her decision, it will just reinforce the idea that Alba are more anti-SNP than anything else. And that's a shame as all pro-independence parties need to be looking for common ground and working together.
