northernscum
Labour MPs call for ten "Red Shifts" to win a majority in England http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/staggers/2015/09/labour-mps-call-ten-red-shifts-win-majority-england Right, so they have come up with a ten point "wish list", no more. That means absolutely jack shit, because as far as I can see there is no mention of HOW they aim to do it. Labour have an almost insurmountable task in getting "Middle England" back from the Tories and they have no-one to blame but themselves for allowing Blairism to take control of their party and ripping every shred of traditional Labour out of it and replacing it with a slightly watered down version of the Tories. thorbotnic
Social attitudes in England are very similar to those in Scotland. Just something that bears occasional repetition.

Scunnered
As much as I embrace dissent and recognise it as an absolute essential part of politics, Jez needs to get this band of particularly nasty bastards under threat of Gulag. Amazing they've went down this route after the cluster#### and embarrassment of Ed's 10 commandments.
UPROAR
Social attitudes in England are very similar to those in Scotland. Just something that bears occasional repetition. Social attitudes in Germany are very similar to those in Scotland - after living and working there many, many years the differences are trivial. Social attitudes in Ireland are very similar to those in Scotland... neither of those things are worth occasional repetition - why exactly would you think your statement does ? I get the impression he's about to compromise on, well, just about everything important. I think it's time you gave up on the Labour party (again) Scunnered. Your Marxist vision of them just isnae gaunnae happen. You will of course be welcomed back into the loving social-democratic embrace of Nicola and the SNP

Scunnered
Be interesting to see if that gets passed in their conference next week. Last membership survey I saw had it 50-50 with don't knows excluded... That was about a week before Corbyns election. One hopes the 60,000 members joined since Jezzas election are of the progressive variety because 3,000 of them will be at conference. northernscum
He's right. Very little difference between all areas of the UK in Social attitudes. So, what explains the massive difference in voting patterns?
Scunnered
So, what explains the massive difference in voting patterns? In what way? The 2015 General Election was an election of culture rather than class. Scottish Nationalism won in Scotland and British Nationalism won in rUK with late swings to the Tories in fear of a Labour-SNP coalition. English and Scottish voters have almost identical attitudes to immigration, Economic and social issues. Social attitude surveys show this time and time again. Just a couple of weeks ago an impressive survey which showed SNP set to win over 50% of the vote in Holyrood also showed a majority of Scots wants the UK to take zero Syrian refugees. I don't think you can class English voters as a single unit when it comes to social attitudes or voting intentions. The North / South divide is massive. Surely the best way to show your social attitude would be to vote for the political party which best reflects it? It is far from being all about nationalism, on either side. It is far from being all about nationalism, on either side. In a perfect world that would be ideal, but it never works out that way, and it's the same all over the world I bet. "I'm not voting Labour because I don't want a SNP coalition". "I don't care if there are less controversial routes to an EU exit. UKIP are the only one who can achieve it". "I'll vote SNP until we're independent... Then I'll vote Green. They're the party for me." etc etc, ad nauseam.
thorbotnic
So, what explains the massive difference in voting patterns? Loads of things. As well as what Scunnered said, you can add on that the Tories are seen as English (at least by some) and so even when people are generally conservative views they won't vote Scottish Conservative and Unionist. Etc etc.
