Majid Haq had bowled really well but Shenwari was always going to target his last over so was really surprised he bowled his 10th when he did. Would have been better to have switched to a seamer then and kept the pressure on. Then when the last 2 were in with 19 needed the field should have been brought in to force them to try and hit over the top. It was far too easy for them to keep picking up singles. They got those 19 without having to play any risky shots. It'll be a struggle to pick up a victory now. . Caledonian Craig Posted February 26, 2015 Share Posted February 26, 2015 It was a golden opportunity but in fairness (on paper) it was a match that could go either way. It was a match that ebbed and flowed. Scotland did very well to get to the total they did considering they were 95 for 5 at one time. They dug themselves out of that hole to post a 200+ score for the first time in a World Cup match. Afghanistan then appeared to have taken complete control when around 80 for 2 and scoring at around five an over but Scotland dragged it back (again encouraging) to put themselves in the box seat but I'd suggest nerves got the better of them as don't forget it was a massive chance to win their first World Cup match.Narrow defeats will always hurt and this one certainly does but we are getting closer. Well lets take that in context. You have to first qualify for the World Cup to create those stats and that is an achievement that a fair few other associate teams would like to have.Cricket is not a sport played by the masses either in Scotland so considering the limitations we have then can we really expect more? Emerging nations knocked us back in the pecking order whilst our youth/coaching system had become antiquated. Couple that with the nation becoming less fit with a growing number of youngsters preferring warmth of home and new-fangled computer consoles to cold dark nights on parks playing fitba and that has stinted our growth. To top that all off the SFA have largely erred in their choice of managers in the past dozen years or so which hasn't helped. Cricket though is played by a minority and I would imagine a low number of kids take up the sport for fear of ridicule for the perceived (very falsely) 'Englishness' of the sport. Also the country has no league system and no real way of bringing talent through so in effect Scotland go to the World Cups in cricket armed with pea-shooters which will always lose when the rest are armed with bazookas (so to speak). Yes our World Cup record in football (finals stages) have been vastly handicapped and blighted by embarrassing slip-ups against lesser sides. That has largely been our downfall. Overnight the batting put in a good performance but the bowling let them down whereas in recent defeats the bowling has performed whilst batting has flopped. They're still playing 50 over cricket from the last century. 20/20 has changed the way the likes of Australia, South Africa, India etc approach the 50 over game, but England haven't similarly moved with the times. 300 is just an average score these days. They batted quite well over the last 15 overs against Sri Lanka but the period from the 10th to the 35th overs was where they were poor. Far too many dot balls. That may be because England are about the last nation that still holds more stock in test cricket and concentrate so much on that that the limited overs format has gotten away from them and the way to play that format. Topcat Posted March 7, 2015 Share Posted March 7, 2015 good result for Pakistan but the Saffers gifted it to them on a plate - going for a ridiculously high run rate to end the match early when just under 5 an over would have seen them through quite comfortably - their shot selection was very poor at times as some of them were attempting to slog most deliveries - whatever happened to staying out in the middle, building a total and not giving your wicket away cheaply.
