ErsatzThistle
His spell at Rangers was partly during the period when we started getting skint (hence diddies like Capucho, Emerson et al) and yet he still won more head-to-head trophies than Martin O'Neill's Celtic. Don't recall Celtic supporters ever demanding O'Neill be sacked unlike the Gers fans did with McLeish. McLeish really did make a lot of pish signings for Rangers: Vanoli, Berg, Ostenstad, Namouchi, Fetai, Bonissel, Eggen, Thompson, Emerson, Capucho, Mlandenovic, Waterreus and Djordjic for example. A few of them were signed only to play a couple of games ! Feck knows how what each of those guys got in wages, I'll bet it was more than generous for most of them. Whilst Martin O'Neill did sign some dross for Celtic such as Hedman, Guppy, Fernandez, Laursen, Camara, Juninho, Henchoz and Sylla they weren't quite on the same appalling level that many of McLeish's signings were. Back to Motherwell, I think a manager like Steve Lomas would do great job for them. He doesn't appear to have been interviewed however. Robroysboy
We sold him to Utrecht, got him from PSV. Sure we did sign someone from Utrecht though? Maybe Michael Doesburg? The game with Utrecht must have been part of the moving on deal then. Thanks Edited December 10, 2014 by Robroysboy
Robroysboy
McLiesh went to Holland to look at a striker and came back with a centre half, Mitchell van der Gaag, who was crocked. He did turn out to be McLieshs best signing. Big Alex had more to spend in one season than Tommy McLean got in ten, the then chairman splashed out the cash to piss off McLean for leaving. McLiesh spent £100k on Andy Roddie but worse than that and I'm sorry for reminding Well fans he spent £200k on John Henry who shortly afterwards moved to Fort William where he struggled to get a game. I can recall Tommy McClean spending alot of money on Brian Martin ( £250,000) which must have been a record breaking signing for Motherwell at the time. When big Brian came on for his debut, I certainly thought " what a waste of money", only to be proven wrong as he turned out to be one of the best players ever to have graced the Fir Park pitch. Yeah, a rare occasion when as a 12-13 year old 2 of my favourite players were centre halfs in Van der Gaag and Brian Martin, only eclipsed by Tommy Coyne (m'lord). The rest were fecking awful though. You also missed out Jeffers, Ostenstad, Gayle, Bernard, Muscat, Fanfan, Nieto, Rodriguez, Maniero and Ashikodi. He was a bombscare in the transfer market. Tommy loved scoring against his old club celtic and he done it numerous times. Must have been a thorn in their side, he should have scored in the 0-0 game in dortmund. A class player but another scotsman who played for ireland, similar to owen coyle who was linked with the vacancy before taking on the dynamo houston job. They didn't and O'Neill is still regarded as a fantastic manager for them by most of my Jungle Jim mates. McLeish, on the other hand, is regarded by most Gers fans, as a bombscare of a manager. His signings were feckin awful, he overseen 7 defeats to Celtic in a row and also went 10 games without a win, which is a club record...............yet he still won more trophies head to head than Celtic did, won the treble and managed to take us to the last 16 of the Champions League. Baffling really. They have already been mentioned in this thread but Capucho would still be the stand out for me. Utterly shite!! Coming up to the cup winning team along with Bobby Russell and Nick Cusack. You can tell when Motherwell are having a stinker of a season we all start reminiscing

Robroysboy
Terry butcher pulled out of manager selection process. Quite happy with this, he has relegated far too often but his spectacular fall with hibs would not fill the dressing room or stands with confidence. sbcmfc
I'm almost certain now it'll be McCoist. I think a lot of Motherwell fans WOULD do walking away in that case! Joking aside, being from the same school of management as McCall he has all the same deficiencies and more without necessarily having any of Mccall's good qualities. Mccoist won't manage again. McCall would probably do a good job at rangers to a point, but I think his weaknesses would prevent him taking Rangers to where they want to be. Billy Davies is apparently a bit of a , he'd fit in perfectly!

At least it's a new face Don't think there was a cheapest option? Think it was a case that the package is £X, regardless. Presumably his knowledge of the English market and scouting background are what swung it in his favour. Van der Gaag has health issues, and Scottish football won't be how he remembers it! (Mcleish brought him to Motherwell for just short of £1/2 a million!)
