Tartan Tarantula
Anyone have any idea how many new voters have been registered?
Alibi
A hell of a lot. Unlikely to be voting No.
Tartan Tarantula
I was looking for something a little more specific than that!!!!
Stapes
I'd heard 180,000 but not sure where this figure came from. Also, not sure if that includes 16-18 year olds.
giblet
I calculated circa 150K (3.6% increase on registered voters)

AbductedbyAliens
97% registered - encouraging. People dont register for the first time to keep things the same surely?
Orraloon
I'd heard 180,000 but not sure where this figure came from. Also, not sure if that includes 16-18 year olds. The number of registered voters has increased by about 300,000 since the last election. Between 150,000 and 200,000 of that are the 16 and 17 year olds. stocky
A record number of people have registered to vote in the Scottish independence referendum, with 97% of the adult population now ready to take part in next week's vote. A total of 4,285,323 makes this the largest electorate the country has ever known for any election or referendum. The figure includes 118,640 voters who have registered in the last month alone, as well as 789,024 postal voters. It marks an increase of over 300,000 since the last Westminster election in 2012 and includes 16- and 17-year-olds who have had the vote extended to them for the first time
Flure
97% registered - encouraging. People dont register for the first time to keep things the same surely? That number is jaw-dropping. Can anyone find what it normally is?
stocky
The unprecedented levels of registration suggest that predictions of a high turnout next Thursday – Alex Salmond has said that he expects 80% – will come to pass. Turnout in Scotland for the 2010 Westminster election was 63.8%, dipping to 50.4% the following year for elections to the Holyrood parliament. Much has been made in recent months of the so-called "missing million" – a term that describes both those eligible to vote but missing from the register as well as those who are registered but habitually do not vote – and whether they could swing the referendum result in favour of independence. Both posts from todays Guardian.
Orraloon
That number is jaw-dropping. Can anyone find what it normally is? Up until the last election it had been pretty steady at just under 4 million registered voters
Jonny
That number is jaw-dropping. Can anyone find what it normally is? CH4 News were saying in the 60's it was 90% but that dropped steadily until the poll tax when it hit >60%. 85% has been the highest since then. thplinth
97+% voter registration is really really extraordinary, almost suspiciously so.
Auld_Reekie
In fairness, what was the percentage registered at last election?
antidote
I heard this morning from my local SNP councillor that there is around 500,000 new registrations in the whole of Scotland and expects around 80% of them to be voting YES. He also told me that at his work, in the local council buildings, that he had been told by the person who collates the registrations that it has only been the SNP who has been handing them in for our area, not 1 from the Labour mob. He also cited the RIC who he said had gathered around 50,000 new registered voters, mainly from the Glasgow area. Warning! Figures may vary from time to time. the_fadiator
97+% voter registration is really really extraordinary, almost suspiciously so. I wonder how many are 'ordinarily resident' in England, therefore committing fraud.

giblet
saw a weird one this morning that there were over 80k postal votes in Edinburgh which would mean around 21% of the electorate. 2nd home naysayers and students?

Including my son (student) - the Edinburgh universities combined probably make up a lot of that 80k.
Orraloon
That number is jaw-dropping. Can anyone find what it normally is? At the last general election we had 3.865 million registered electorate which would be about 90% It was a wee bit higher for the Scottish election in 2011 at 3.978 million which was about 93%.
