Lamia
Apologies if this has already been covered but I just heard the official Poppy Appeal single and am utterly disgusted. This is an insult to one of the greatest anti war songs ever. If the song wasn't bad enough missing out the anti-war message and jazzing it up then the video is, well I have no words...... I am so angry that they could use this song in this way. So here is the original and a cover that does it justice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUzQ6Am-bbc
rabmania
TMTCH version...almost unbearable anger to go with the sadness.
Hertsscot
Lamia you obviously skipped the Great Covers thread. I posted a live version of the TMTCH, bizarrely and ironically on Youtube it was preceded by the awful Joss Stone rendition!
Lamia
I just found that out when I was playing one of the Eric Bogle videos. That just made me even more angry!

ShedTA
What would have been wrong with using the original? Not sexy enough for remembering the dead?
TartanTeddy
Thought people were being a bit over the top with the criticism, then I just saw her sing it pre match at the NFL game at Wembley... Horrible horrible rendition that removes all the meaning from such a powerful song - dire! TT

scotlad
What would have been wrong with using the original? Not sexy enough for remembering the dead? Oh, most definitely not. You need the sickly and winsome Joss Stone, prancing, pouting and trying to be sultry in the middle of a field (possibly foreign) to achieve that. It really is a terrible rendition of the song, its powerful, anti-war message completely neutralised. I lasted as far as the bit where the gospel choir appear in the background - that wouldn't have looked out of place in a full blown spoof. adamntg
That was hateful. What about the killing, the dying, it was all done in vain? Did they forget about that bit?

Someone has posted this, apologies as not sure who originally wrote it. Well, how do you do, Private Willie McBride, May I borrow your story for poppies and pride? For we need a new record to reach number one, So I'm changing the lyrics, and I'm nearly done. Now, I do love your song, but the horrors of war? To be honest-- that's not what this single is for. So please keep it quiet that we wasted your blood As your lungs slowly filled with the Passchedaele mud. Did they keep any verses? Thank God for small mercies. Did you turn in your grave when our record went round? Did they cut out the last verse and chorus? Did they mutilate "Flowers of the Forest"? just finished listening to the song it's horrific. It's the worst "peace" of "art" i've heard in long time, truly awful.
