  1. Looks like a very strange handshake to me - I bet his trouser leg is rolled up. The policeman looks like he is taking her from behind. Also looks like Walter Swinburn who would go on to ride SHERGAR. Probably too tall to be him.
  2. Aye, ridiculous really but at least I half-tried. Remember, nae Skyscanner or WWW then. It was a case of going into travel agents and getting ripped off. I think a lot of the folk who actually got over there went via USA. I did not have nearly enough money and the flights to Benidorm never mind Buenos Aires were out of my reach. I did hear of one guy from Edinburgh who met a local lassie over there and came back with her and got married. Different days then mind. Ma maw didnae know what I was doing but there was none of this ringing up on mobile phones every 10 minutes to see if you were all right. 'that's me off then, Wembley/Anfield/Wrexham bound - see you when I see you'. Might just have been my perspective, but nearly everyone seemed to be absolutely steamin at the games. Wembley 77 and Anfield 77 my best days as Scotland supporter. Eons ago.
  3. Agree strongly๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ
  4. Paterson playing well for Cardiff at wing half. Has physique for centre back and I wonder if he could play there for us and get forward for free kicks and corners- he scores goals. Would need to be tested in that position at club level I suppose.
  5. I was 19 in 1978 and, having been to both home qualifiers and the 'away' game at Anfield decided to try to get over there for the finals where I expected us, rather conservatively to maybe finish 3rd place in the tournament. In retrospect, my efforts to get to Argentina were probably half-hearted at best. I rapped my job in early April - I was earning around ยฃ14 a week assembling transformers and I think and a pint of beer was about 30p. I think I had ยฃ50 in my pocket (lot of money BTW) and I went to Liverpool docks (hitch-hiked from Birmingham - the easy bit) and asked to work my passage to Argentina. You can imagine how much the dockers took the piss - I was wearing a replica top and a tammy. Nae kilt. One bloke offered to sneak me on board a South Africa bound vessel but I suspected that he may have had unhealthy ideas so I knocked that back. Basically, gave up and watched the debacle unfold on the telly in between some good nights on the piss with my savings. loads of English people were behind us - until it all went pear shaped - and the lyrics of Ally's Tartan Army were really embarrassing. Plenty folk did go but I have never met one who did. I think I am also correct in stating that our players lined up to hear GSTFQ as our national anthem. The thing that gets to me most about it now is the whole section of the Scottish Football museum celebrating Archie Gemmill's wondergoal. Maybe it is no longer there. It think it was the Holland game that cemented the expression 'glorious failure' into our psyche and language. We actually had a very good team and squad and should have done better, but, this was the era when we judged ourselves against England who were basically a team of heavy drinkers at that time as I recall. We had beaten them at Wembley in June 77 so obviously, we were world beaters. By WC 1978, that team was probably a bit over the top and needed fresher legs and Danny McGrain was injured. Ally McLeod (bless him) stuck by his midfield and Sounness only played in the Holland game. The Iran game was the worst IMO and there are all sorts of stories about poor hotel facilities and lack of planning. Wha's like us, eh? Only 3 teams including us in our qualifying group for that WC though so maybe a good omen regarding forthcoming nations league. Scotland and two others. talking of which, as I wondered during 1982 WC qualifying campaign, when did Israel become part of Europe?
  6. Exactly how I feel about it. Renewed me and my lad who sailed through the IT bit and added fotays name bother. Tel Aviv, here we come. We are wailing, we are wailing..............
  7. Barry Ferguson and Alan McGregor as back up team. Would make the away double headers interesting. Is Andy Goram available?
  8. Just butting in to applaud your use of language that appears to have gone unnoticed. Pulling up trees at Forest. I like it.
  9. Any Buddies think Lewis Morgan could be ready for full squad. Looked our best forward player v ingerland in u21 game recently.
  10. I think the horrible c&&t also made reference to a โ€˜triumphant Aryan stockโ€™ when referring to some commotion involving Chinese people. As many of us are aware the UK has great expertise in propaganda .
  11. Is it no 100% at international level? Please do not interpret this as me wanting big Sam though.
  12. Yet, in terms of progression in major tournaments, the bold Herr Vogts remains our most successful manager this century.
  13. Semantics I know but this term 'glorious failure' arose in 70s I believe - for the record, when GSTQ was played for us when we lined up before game. 74 and 78 world cup finals when we qualified but did not progress beyond group stages. 74 in particular when we were unbeaten and went out on goal diff. It became a bit oif a monkey on our backs going into 80s and 1998 when we played reasonably well against alleged better sides but f****d it up against supposed minnows. Now, of course the promised land is mere qualification for final stages and 'glorious failure' has become synonymous with the Scotland football team. In my opinion, is used far too readily and would rather just hear 'failure'. Because that is what it is. I also believe that Scots commentators use the term 'glorious failure' in a mildly kind way whilst their English counterparts use it in their usual smug way, barely able to hide the schadenfreude that oozes from their every pore if they have been unfortunate enough to be assigned to a game that does not involve England but where, thank f##k we do not progress. They would much rather be waxing lyrical about the 'world class' of Kane, Ali, et al. Another good one is how they always go on about how great it would be if Scotland qualified. Apparently the TA adds colour but half the c##ts are not old enough to remember when we last made it and they do not mean it anyway. Patronising tossers. If and when we do the term 'glorious faioure' would be waiting in the wings for when we go out, much to their joy.
  14. Or, even better, look at Iceland- again.
  15. You being a Hibee reminds me of another thing about being club- neutral. I fully appreciate passionate or 'proper' fans as I call them. Sunshine on Leith being belted out at Hampden cup fijnal for example. Listened to Taffies belting out their anthem tonight on radio. Really impressive.
  16. Take it easy, comrade. I am perhaps fortunate in that I no longer have strong feelings for a club, saving all my footballing passion for my country. Easier as I now live abroad but go to club football games and do not care who wins and can thus enjoy the game. Sad to say that I have made Scotland games so important that I am not sure if 'enjoyment' is fitting word. Love going to the games though but by f##k it puts blood pressure through the roof!! Should not mean so much but it always will. Like millions of others I suppose and it is probably true to say that the large majority of us support unsuccessful teams. Funny old game............... ?
  17. This is one of reasons that I think he will walk. We may look back with regret. Big yellow taxi and all that.
  18. Don't disagree and would never question the wee man's commitment and love of Scotland. I believe that he has improved us. If forced to be critical of him, it would be his loyalty to certain players and what appears to be reluctance to play likes of McGinn and McGregor, in form players. However, he is in charge and on the spot and he has my respect. I also like his patter which offends many on this board.
  19. There is no real point in what I am about to write but it won't stop me. Given we are /were on such a roll, had we qualified for Russia, how long before the expectations exceeded the reality, setting us up for another huge disappointment? Lose to Costa Rica, draw with Syria, then beat Germany to lose out on further progress by goal difference. We'd probably take it now but that is what used to happen in so called good old days.
  20. Not sure but old enough to remember my astonishment at first Roxburgh then Brown appointments. Different era right enough.
  21. We'll have friendly away to Wales who look like they are out too.
  22. I do not want Moyes. Prefer Lambert if a Scot and will perhaps have a wee interest at 16\1.
  23. I would not be at all surprised if he has already shagged her, just a matter of waiting now. I'll be 78 in 20 years time. World Cup in DRS( Democratic Republic of Scotland). Rule change means the hosts no longer qualify automatically.
