international football is always televised. does anyone really care what the channel is?

Nothing wrong with england being on all the itvs

Aye but for the other nations that ITV serves it's hardly fair, bid a bomb to get England's on terrestrial TV. Remember Sky Sports is extremely expensive.

The problem is that the England team get far more exposure on terrestrial telly in Scotland than the Scotland team do!

What exactly is stopping SFA's Head of Communications from getting into a taxi and hopping across to meet with STV's Senior Sports Editor and agreeing a method for STV to have a Scotland highlights show?

There's loads of scope that the SFA could offer STV to make a highlights show worth their while. A shared sponsor (Scotland highlights brought to you in association with Vauxhall), exclusive interviews with the players and staff are just two things off the top of my head.

SFA are responsible for promoting the game in Scotland and by not having a highlights show on terrestrial telly they're failing in that duty.

Nothing, but the problem is the SFA will go with whoever offers them the best deal, and probably find STV do not have the funds to offer the SFA anything they could say is worthwhile (different in the past when it was either STV or BBC you go to,but now sky is king.... ITV spent a fortune getting England's games).

There was a debate in the Scottish Parliment few years back to get Scotland games on terrestrial tv, with both STV and BBC Scotland saying they just simply could not compete with SKY TV (who were still offering the SFA a deal that was peanuts compared to what England gets).

Also, even a highlights show might be out of their control, as ITV are not going to want to upset their programme schedule to allow for a scotland game highlight (especially if it was to get in the way of something like XFactor, I am a celebrity, Jonathan Ross and any other rubbish they force feed us)

Also tv deals for the euros do not go straight to the home FA's, but put in one big pot by UEFA to be dished out at the end, so more important to get the better deals.

STV which is a regional channel of ITV who hold the rights to England international (actually shocked, as usually they will just stick on a police academy movie or something when there is english football).

Not really SFA or STV fault (STV will not have the budget to complete with Sky for Scottish football).

It was a no brainier not to screen the game highlights on STV and choose something more universally appealing to viewers

Scotland highlights would be for a very narrow set of viewers –Friday night is prime time telly, most people actually(weirdly) don’t watch football many are at the game, have itv4 ,have SKY or watch in the pub so the viewing figures & advertising revenue would be limited.

STV is not part of ITV they are a separate legal entity with its own shareholders , they control their own programming and scheduling, however ITV and STV have a network agreement so in return for the franchise they purchase 16 million worth of programmes from them STV can opt out of a certain amount and also make or purchase their own content .

ITV has made its own commercial decision to pay for England Games , this isn’t paid for by STV

Or Scottish tax payers – so nothing to with the referendum (re Bzzzz comment)

STV make their own choices football doesn’t feature prominently and you can’t blame them really, SKY, BT and to a lesser extent the BBC have allot of the market sewn up , STV is not really a football channel unless it come with prime viewing figures (ECL) , think when was the last time they had a Scottish league or Cup game featured ?

So England v Slovenia live on STV on a Saturday evening (prime time) is profitable but half an hour of highlights of Scotland v Ireland isn't? Aye right.

Depends how you measure "profitable". If it's spend V advertising revenue, then, yes, it probably would be.

All International sporting events should be available to the majority of the people of the nations involved, i.e terrestrial TV. The pay TV brigade can have as much of the domestic competitions that they want. That is how it should be.

Good point but keep in mind those who don;t have sky are part of the 'pay tv brigade' too.

BBC Scotland should be showing our games. If they can screen Andy Murray's matches and EPL highlights they should be looking to screen the national teams matches.

I realise those two points having nothing to do with this, just trying to give examples. They would surely command as big as or at least a similar audience to them?
